Cameron was born in Maytown, Pennsylvania, to Charles Cameron and Marth Pfoutz.
Cameron served as state printer of Pennsylvania from 1825 until 1827 and was state adjutant general in 1826.
In 1867, Cameron was again elected to the Senate and served there until 1877, when on assurances from the Pennsylvania legislature that his son, James Donald Cameron would be the successor to his seat, he resigned.

CAMERON, GEN. SIMON, son of Charles Cameron and Martha Pfoutz, was born March 8, 1799, at Maytown, Lancaster county, Pa. On the paternal side he is descended from the clan Cameron, of Scotland, who shared their fortunes with the unfortunate Charles Edward, whose star of hope sunk on the field of Culloden.
Donald Cameron, his great-grandfather, was a participant in that memorable battle, and having escaped the carnage made his way to America, arriving about 1745-46.
Cameron, declaring his election to the Senate as having been outside the party organization, but this treatment he found to his cost was not conducive to his own peace of mind, sent for General Cameron, made a, truce with him, and there was never any more trouble.

Cameron managed to win a majority of the caucus votes and the nomination, and with the Democrats outnumbered almost two to one, he was elected.
In 1871 Cameron, on the basis of seniority, succeeded to the chairmanship of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.
Donald had never run for public office, but he moved easily through political circles as his father’s mouthpiece and right hand man. A Democratic majority in Pennsylvania in 1875 made impossible Donald’s election to the Senate, so Simon urged President Grant to appoint Donald to his cabinet.

For its distinguished services during the Egyptian campaign, the Cameron Highlanders, besides receiving the thanks of the king and parliament, was one of the regiments which received the honour of bearing the figure of a Sphinx, with the word "Egypt," on its colours and appointments.
Cameron was succeeded in the command of the regiment by Major Alexander Petrie, who, besides receiving a gold medal, had the brevet rank of Lt.-Colonel conferred on him; and the senior captain, Andrew Brown, was promoted to the brevet rank of Major.
Sergeant Donald M’Intosh was selected for this distinguished honour, and, on the 4th of June 1811, was appointed ensign in the 88th Regiment.
