Alfred North Whitehead - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Whitehead was asked to give the 1927 Gifford Lectures at the University of Edinburgh, which resulted in his (1929), Process and Reality, the book that founded process philosophy and is a major contribution to modern metaphysics.
Whitehead's political views were, roughly, libertarian without the label.
From the outset, Whitehead's theory received less attention than Einstein's, and was generally discredited by 1972, by a comparison of experimental and predicted variability of the gravitational constant G.

Whitehead's philosophical influence can be felt in all three of the main areas in which he worked (i.e., logic and the foundations of mathematics, the philosophy of science, and metaphysics) as well as in other areas such as ethics, education and religion.
Whitehead's basic idea was that we obtain the abstract idea of a spatial point by considering the limit of a real-life series of volumes extending over each other, for example, a nested series of Russian dolls or a nested series of pots and pans.
Like Gottlob Frege, Whitehead and Russell took the view that numbers could be identified with sets of sets, and that number-theoretic operations could be explained in terms of set theoretic operations such as intersection, union, and difference.

Alfred North Whitehead for the Muddleheaded
Whitehead's God is not the same as the world, and nor is the world a part of God, but they are both forms within the process of enjoyment and desire.
Whitehead asserts first, that the soul is a personal society of serial occasions piled on one another; and second, that perception in the primitive mode of causal efficacy, plus introspection, provides the only information that gives meaning, life and warmth to the dry digital data from the five senses.
Whitehead calls himself an empiricist, by which he means a philosopher who takes all of human experience into account, including vague, primitive experiences, such as sleepiness, as well as the clear experiences, like a lightning flash.

Powell's Books - The Colossus of New York: A City in 13 Parts by Colson Whitehead
Whitehead’s style is as multilayered and multifarious as New York itself: Switching from third person, to first person, to second person, he weaves individual voices into a jazzy musical composition that perfectly reflects the way we experience the city.
Colson Whitehead conveys with almost uncanny immediacy the feelings and thoughts of longtime residents and of newcomers who dream of making it their home; of those who have conquered its challenges; and of those who struggle against its cruelties.
Whitehead frequently abandons conventions of English grammar, focusing instead on the creation of mood and the insinuation of tone.

Whitehead was influenced by the ideas developed in the early 1900s by French Jewish philosopher Henri-Louis Bergson.
According to Whitehead, everything in the universe is characterized by experience (which is not to be confused with consciousness); there is no mind-body duality under this system, because "mind" is simply seen as a very developed kind of experienceing.
Whitehead is perhaps most well known for developing process philosophy, which was then developed into process theology by many liberal theologian/philosophers, such as Charles Hartshorne.

 Principia Mathematica
Primarily at issue were the kinds of assumptions that Whitehead and Russell needed to complete their project.
The axiom of reducibility was introduced as a means of overcoming the not completely satisfactory effects of the theory of types, the theory that Russell and Whitehead used to restrict the notion of a well-formed expression, and so to avoid paradoxes such as Russell's paradox.
Second, by exhibiting so clearly the deductive power of the new logic, Whitehead and Russell were able to show how powerful the modern idea of a formal system could be, thus opening up new work in what was soon to be called metalogic.

Whitehead, who Americanized his name from Weisskopf when he immigrated from Bavaria, Germany, was a mechanic by trade who lived and worked in Boston, New York, Buffalo, Tonawanda, Johnstown, Pittsburgh, and finally Bridgeport, Connecticut around the turn-of-the-century.
Of course, Whitehead's supporters point out that the German immigrant was not a man a letters, but a mechanic, and the fact that he simply did not bother to document his flights does not mean that he did not actually make them.
According to at least one biography, Whitehead was fascinated by aviation from an early age and was inspired by the glider flights of Otto Lillienthal to built his own model glider at age 13.
