JJ did say something about it being a 'very tough show to try and sell'.
I read a thing saying JJ was only gonna give him "The Catch" if he slimmed down and tried to look "good enough" to carry the show as the lead, which is why he lost all that weight at the start of season 3.

Audition tapes for all the major actors in the cast are included, expect for Terry O'Quinn (Locke) who JJ Abrams knew from his time on "Alias." Some of the actors I thought did a great job in their tapes and others?...
But you can't deny that Abrams and his casting crew saw that certain something in each of them and picked exactly the right person (even creating characters for actors they felt were "right").
It was just actors shifting in unison and JJ Abrams shaking the film magazine as they shot...) In between all the technical stuff you get to see the cast and crew meet and eventually bond during some tough conditions.

I’ve previously written that the upcoming Lost episode “Not in Portland” had been directed by Lost co-creator JJ Abrams based on the information on IMBD.
Nevertheless, JJ said that he was going to be more involved this season and I know that I’m not the only one who will be a bit disappointed if he doesn’t keep his word so this is a bit sad to hear.

I think if you're name can be abbreviated into JJ, then you are pretty much set for life.
Not only will your initials be that of uber creative, JJ Abrams, but it could also stand for superhero names, like Judge Justice - Keeper of Peace in Ohio.
My only problem would be that people with the initials JJ often have two first names, like John James or Joseph Jay or Jose Jesus Juarez y Juarez Juanson.

Well, thanks to my interview with JJ back around the time of MI3 that I did for Penthouse, I had JJ's contact info and sent his Blackberry a, "Is this BS or not" email.
JJ wrote back in about 20 minutes with a one word response, 'False!" - I then wrote him back to say, "Well, heads up, somebody is trying to spread that rumor." - I then wrote the scooper back to say JJ says it ain't so.
