JAMES SULLY - LoveToKnow Article on JAMES SULLY
His father, Francois de Bethune, baron de Rosny, (1532-1575), was the son of Jean de Bethune, to whom in 1529 his wife Anne de Melun brought as part of her dowry a seigneurie at Rosny-sur-Seine, which later (1601) was made a marquisate.
On the renewal of civil war Rosny again joined Henry of Navarre, and at the battle of Ivry (1590) was seriously wounded.
The young baron de Rosny was taken to Paris by his patron and was studying at the college of Bour-gogne at the time of the massacre of St Bartholomew's Day, from which he escaped by discreetly carrying a book of hours under his arm.

J.-H. Rosny - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
J.-H. Rosny was the pseudonym of the brothers Joseph Henri Honoré Boex (1856 - 1940) and Séraphin Justin François Boex (1859 - 1948), both born in Brussels.
(J. Rosny Jr.) In 1903, the Boex brothers were named to the first jury for the Prix Goncourt, an influential annual French literary award.
Of the two, the elder brother Joseph (J.-H. Rosny aîné) is somewhat better known and many of the joint Rosny works are incorrectly attributed only to the elder brother.

 J. P. Vernier- The SF of J.H. Rosny the Elder
Rosny always emphasizes unity: man is not the centre of the universe, but his world may be intimately associated with other parallel worlds; primitive life fills the modern observer with a sense of perfect harmony; Eden may not mean peace but it certainly means a natural order of things.
In the first one Rosny inverts a number of generally accepted notions concerning biological evolution: in it primitive men are found living in friendship with and subordination to elephants, whose decisions give an example of wisdom as opposed to the murderous folly of men.
Rosny devotes several stories to variations on the physical shapes acquired by different types of hominidae who, by some accident of nature, have been kept apart from the development of the modern world.
