		Keyse Jama, originally from Somalia, was the subject of intense legal wrangling last year over immigration and deportation policy.
		Jama's case set a precedent when the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that Jama and other deportees could be sent to countries like Somalia that lack a functioning government.

	JAMA v. INS
		Jama, a Somalian refuge, pled guilty to third degree assault in Minnesota state court.
		Upon consulting the statute, the INS determined that clause six governs Jama’s removal and he should be returned to Somalia, the “country in which [he] was born.” After the INS issued a warrant of removal to Somalia, Jama filed a petition for a writ of habeas corpus to prevent his deportation.
		The court concluded that, “as a matter of simple statutory syntax and geometry,” the acceptance requirement is confined to clause seven, and does not apply to clauses one through seven.

		We designed and pretested a 21-item, self-administered questionnaire to obtain the following information: data about the corresponding author (including demographic characteristics and experience with writing and publishing); data about individuals who provided writing assistance or made other contributions but were not authors; and data about the contributions and functions of coauthors.
		The questionnaire was mailed to corresponding authors in July 1996 with a cover letter signed by the editor of JAMA explaining that responses would be kept confidential and anonymous, a photocopy of the first page of the article, and a preaddressed, stamped return envelope.
		The findings also suggest that the ICMJE authorship guidelines may not be well understood by all authors and may be difficult to apply to certain types of articles such as non-data-based reviews and editorials.

	Funding for biomedical research doubles in last decade
		From 1994 to 2003, total funding for biomedical research in the U.S. doubled to $94.3 billion, with industry providing 57 percent of the funding and the National Institutes of Health providing 28 percent, according to a study in the September 21 issue of JAMA, a theme issue on medical research.
		Lead author Hamilton Moses III, M.D., of the Alerion Institute, North Garden, Va., presented the findings of the study today at a JAMA media briefing on medical research.
