		JATP, so named because the first concerts were staged at the Los Angeles Philharmonic, began in the early '40s, the brainchild of Norman Granz.
		JATP did infect the staged jam with a tastelessness by no means indigenous to the form.
		At JATP those styles found common ground on the solid rock of 4/4, the changes hammered out without subtlety (you can't fail to hear every bridge a soloist crosses), the aggression offering a raucous alternative to dance as a way of participating.

		Jazz at the Philharmonic (JATP) was the title of a series of concerts and recordings produced by Norman Granz.
		The first concert was held in 1944 in Los Angeles, and featured Illinois Jacquet, Jack McVea, J.J. Johnson, Shorty Sherock, Nat King Cole, and Les Paul; Jacquet in particular created a sensation.
		In the 1970s, Granz kept the spirit of the JATP alive on his many jam session-type records for his label Pablo.

		Double bass drums were still a novelty by the time he joined JATP, and his solo here, an extension of "Skin Deep," features them prominently, from the exploratory beginning to the extraordinary conclusion.
		JATP ballads seem like an afterthought and a ploy, a psychological device employed to calm the audience after the heated jam session and heighten its anticipation for the fireworks to come.

		Mysteriously sequestered for over a half a century this previously unreleased slice of the JATP spectacle is fairly typical of Granz's winsome formula.
