Topic: JBOD

RAID - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In this sense, concatenation is akin to the reverse of partitioning.
JBOD is sometimes used to turn several odd-sized drives into one useful drive.
The difference between JBOD and LVM/LSM is that the address remapping between the logical address of the concatenated device and the physical address of the disc is done by the RAID hardware instead of the OS kernel as it is LVM/LSM.

Storage Networking World Online - How to Evaluate Success and Plan for the Next Step - Changing from shared bandwidth ...
JBOD involves consolidating a group of disks into a single shelf holding anywhere from two to 16 drives.
In a JBOD environment, a host or a RAID controller connects to a JBOD via a single connection with two channels while retaining access to a large group of drives.
In a daisy-chain topology, a controller is connected to a JBOD; the JBOD is connected to a second JBOD; the second JBOD is connected to a third JBOD; and this process continues until the maximum number of drives in a FC-AL segment is obtained.

JBOD (Just-a-Bunch-Of-Disks) - Like it sounds, a JBOD is nothing more than a bunch of disk drives in a box.
The major disadvantage of a striped JBOD is that if one drive in the box fails, ALL of the data is lost.
Note: A striped JBOD is also referred to as a RAID 0.

RAID versus JBOD in storage-intensive SANs
JBOD (Just a Bunch of Disks) is often promoted as a cheaper alternative to a RAID array for applications such as SANs that use a lot of storage.
Unlike RAID, which is organized in various manners, many of which offer redundancy and error recovery, JBOD is simply treated as one or more large disk drives.
While JBOD is definitely cheaper, Piyush Patel, director of multimedia and digital communications at Northern Oklahoma College (Tonkawa, OK) (www.mmdclab.com) has definite opinions based on his experience with the schools 23-seat SAN-connected digital video creation and editing lab.

JBOD - a definition from Whatis.com - see also: just a bunch of disks
Although, JBOD also makes the disks appear to be a single one, it accomplishes that by combining the drives into one larger logical one.
JBOD doesn't deliver any advantages over using separate disks independently and doesn't provide any of the fault tolerance or performance benefits of RAID.
Other resources on JBOD can be found at SearchStorage.com.

"Just A Bunch Of Disks" (JBOD)
JBOD isn't really RAID at all, but I discuss it here since it is sort of a "third cousin" of RAID...
JBOD can be thought of as the opposite of partitioning: while partitioning chops single drives up into smaller logical volumes, JBOD combines drives into larger logical volumes.
It still requires a controller card or software driver, which means that almost any system that can do JBOD can also do RAID 0, and RAID 0 has significant performance advantages over JBOD.
