Note that JPEG interchange format requires (as does JFIF) that all table specifications used in the encoding process be coded in the bitstream prior to their use.
The JFIF APP0 marker provides information which is missing from the JPEG stream: version number, X and Y pixel density (dots per inch or dots per cm), pixel aspect ratio (derived from X and Y pixel density), thumbnail.
In JFIF files, the position of the pixels in subsampled components are defined with respect to the highest resolution component.

 JFIF, JPEG File Interchange Format
JFIF is a minimal file format that enables JPEG bitstreams to be exchanged between a wide variety of platforms and applications.
JFIF conforms to the interchange format syntax specified in JPEG Standard (ISO/IEC 10918-1, Annex B); its only additional requirement is the mandatory presence of the application segment APP0 marker right after the SOI (Start of Image) marker.
JFIF files (in version 1.02) can store thumbnails along with a larger image, including a means for defining thumbnails from source images with color space other than 24-bit RGB.

"JFIF" is the correct name for the image format commonly known as "JPEG." Strictly speaking, JPEG is a method of compression.
This is often useful when converting dithered images to JFIF: a moder- ate smoothing factor of 10 to 50 gets rid of dithering patterns in the input file, resulting in a smaller JFIF file and a better-looking image.
JFIF is not ideal for cartoons, line drawings, and other images that have only a few distinct colors.

JFIF decoders must be prepared to ignore unrecognized extension markers and APPn segments.
The JFIF marker is essentially a guarantee that the file conforms to the JFIF conventions.
Most JFIF decoders therefore regard the JFIF marker segment as optional, and are quite capable of reading a raw JPEG data stream that complies with the JFIF conventions regarding color space and sample alignment.

JFIF files can have either 8 bits per sample or 12 bits per sample.
If the JFIF file uses the CMYK or YCCK color space, the input does not actually contain enough information to know what color each pixel is. To know what color a pixel is, one would have to know the properties of the inks to which the color space refers.
The latter is used by Adobe Photoshop when it creates a bare JFIF output file (but not when it creates JFIF output as part of Encapsulated Postscript output).

 Manpage of PNMTOJPEG
This is useful for when you convert a file from JFIF to PNM using jpegtopnm, then transform it, then convert it back to JFIF with pnmtojpeg, and you don't know whether or not it includes an EXIF header.
Note that if you specify different horizontal and vertical densities, the resulting JFIF image is not a true representation of the input PNM image, because pnmtojpeg converts the raster pixel-for-pixel and the pixels of a PNM image are defined to be square.
This is often useful when converting dithered images to JFIF: a moderate smoothing factor of 10 to 50 gets rid of dithering patterns in the input file, resulting in a smaller JFIF file and a better-looking image.

JFIF is the format typically used when software reads and writes what is commonly referred to as a JPEG (.JPG) file.
Although JFIF is a very simple format-containing little more than a header followed by a JPEG data stream-it is very portable across all operating systems, and it quickly became the de facto standard file format for storing JPEG image data.
JFIF took a shortcut by requiring that all JFIF images have a gamma of 1.0.

The reason for the reversion was that there were discovered in the world files that contain JFIF images followed by something other than another JFIF image.

JFIF is the technical name for the Image Format better (but inaccurately) known as JPEG.
This term is used only when the difference between the Image Format and the Image Compression is crucial.
Strictly speaking, however, JPEG does not define an Image Format, and therefore in most cases it would be more precise to speak of JFIF rather than JPEG.
