		In 1999, JJ72 released their first E.P 'October Swimmer' but it failed to make the charts or raise their profile so they took to the road and toured constantly for a year attempting to make a breakthrough.
		The release of their album 'JJ72' was followed quickly by the re-release of the singles 'October Swimmer' and 'Snow' and all achieved success.
		I first heard JJ72 on Radio 1 in 1999, it was a demo of 'Snow' and I remember I was driving to see a client and not really concentrating on the radio but this song immediately made me sit up and notice.

		When Irish band JJ72 made their debut in 2000 they were touted as the next big thing.
		In particular, Suede and Joy Division are referenced but JJ72 doesn't attempt to mimic their idols note for note.
		I'm not sure I know anything more about JJ72 after hearing this album than I did before, but what I do understand is that the trio had a magical chemistry.

		JJ72 single 'She's Gone' entered the UK charts at 136 this week which is quite impressive considering the lack of promotion it was given.

	A review
		It felt like JJ72 had been away for a very long time, before returning in late September, with the fantastic comeback single Formulae.
		JJ72 have progressed rapidly, since their eponymous debut album was released in 2000, and it now seems, that classics such as October Swimmer, Oxygen and Snow, only hinted at what the band were hoping to achieve artistically, emotionally and spiritually.
		After a triumphant set, JJ72 return for the encore with Bumble Bee – Mark’s loud distorted guitar, Hilary’s thunderous bass and Fergal’s military precision drumming – culminate with Mark lying on his back, and throwing his plectrum into the crowd.

		Layers of clean, barely distorted guitars are the foundation of the majority of the tracks from the album, as evident in the lead-off track "October Swimmer." But by integrating stringed instruments with the bass-guitar-drums formula, JJ72 have succeeded in creating a fresh sound.
		The third track on the album, "Oxygen," is the song which gave JJ72 its break and for good reason.
		Calling JJ72 the next U2 is a big stretch but the band was certainly worthy of the "Best New Band" award which was bestowed upon them at last year's Irish Music Awards.

		Of course they like JJ72, any Coldplay fan would, and those that didn't know the band before the show, surely went out looking for their debut album JJ72 (Lakota/Columbia) after the show.
		JJ72 stormed through other high points off the debut record, such as the enchanting "October Swimmer", another slice of pop perfection, the alternately operatic and grungy "Snow", and the endearing "Undercover Angel".
		JJ72 may do well to learn from their musical mentors and spend the requisite time touring the US over and over.

		Somehow however, the fresh-faced, cherubic, whinnying collective they call JJ72 seem to have snuck through and settled comfortably in the pop landscape.
		Back in 2000, JJ72 seemed to appear from nowhere (in truth they hail from Dublin) amid NME's excited gossipy whispers (the origins of the name is still a mystery) and lots of fl and white photo-shoots.
		No doubt a new found maturity and depth of emotion will be cited as an influence (standard second album musings) but sadly it seems popularity and originality are directly inproportional - as JJ72's popularity has increased, their offerings have waned and Formulae is, while a decent enough toe-tapper, no Oxygen.

		And that sums JJ72 up, confident in what they have got to offer whilst not letting their success go to their heads.
