Until the year 2001, the JLPT first grade was a requirement for anyone who wanted to attend a public university in Japan, but from 2002 it is going to be replaced with the Nihongo Ryuugaku Shiken (which is said rumoured to be easier and more practical).
The JLPT will continue to be important for people who want to be translators or work at Japanese companies.
The JLPT requires you to be familiar with a lot of vocabulary and grammatical patterns that you never hear in everyday conversation and almost everyone who takes it expresses frustration about how many useless things they had to learn in order to pass it.

A certain fluency in the use of the Japanese in all the four forms will be developed at this level and, by and large, students should be able to handle more elaborate situations with native speakers, though perhaps with a bit of hesitation or the need to rely on dictionaries or body language.
The students should be sufficiently familiar with the language to the extent of being comfortable in using it as a medium of communication (oral, written, listening and reading) with native speakers.
By the end of the module, the student’s knowledge of the language should be sufficient to use it in a Japanese environment without having to resort to other linguistic aids.

I then noticed that this particular Wakan installation was using the JLPT 1,2,3,4 lists that were linked to from a forum post many months ago, rather than the more recent JLPT 2,3 and 4 lists linked to from the Wakan Downloads page, so I deleted the old ones and imported the new ones.
Unfortunately, there are many entries in the JLPT lists-- especially the Level 4 and Level 3 lists-- which have hiragana spellings instead of kanji spellings, even when the words are not usually spelled that way.
This is because the JLPT tests require the knowledge of many vocabulary words before they require the knowledge of how to spell them with kanji.
