JP233 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The JP233 was a British submunition delivery system consisting of a pair of large pods carrying several hundred submunitions designed to attack runways.
The Panavia Tornado equipped with the JP233 would fly over a target runway, at which point the pods would dispense their payload.
This is an unusual feature of the JP233, as most other submunition delivery systems essentially function as free-falling bombs rather than remain with their aircraft during operation.

JP.233 was developed as a means to destroy, and prevent repair, of Warsaw Pact airfields.
JP.233 was carried by Panavia Tornadoes and was used operationally in the 1991 Gulf War.
The JP.233 submunitions were later banned under the Ottawa Protocol that bans the use of landmines.

 Coastal Command History - Squadrons
Over 6,000 sorties were flown in theatre by the RAF between the outbreak of hostilities on 16 January and the cessation on 28 February, of which offensive sorties by Tornado GR1 and Jaguar aircraft totalled over 2,000.
In the first 24 hours of offensive operations RAF aircraft flew a total of 101 sorties, an intensity of activity which was sustained throughout the early period of the conflict.
Thanks to their night and all-weather penetration capability - and their unique JP233 airfield denial weapons - the Tornado GR1s were ideally suited to offensive counter attacks against iraqi airfields and were used intensively for that purpose in the early days.

Some of the Iraqi air bases were extremely large and the tactic was to cut the taxiway from the shelter so that there was no need to destroy the whole runway.
JP233 bombs were used and they required the Tornado aircraft to fly over the target area at low level.
JP233 attacks against the taxiways and runways made sure that the aircraft couldn't take off from the bases.

But proper delivery of the JP233 required the aircraft to fly low across the Iraqi airfields, allowing antiaircraft artillery and short-range shoulder-fired missiles to take a disastrous toll.
As a result of the efficiency and responsiveness of Iraqi airfield-repair teams, damage caused by the JP233 submunition was inconsequential.
Although not stated publicly, the JP233 attacks were probably intended to hinder operations at air bases for at least a day.

The RAF's role has been to attack airfields and although only one of the aircraft lost was carrying the JP233 runway attack bomb, the indications are that most losses were suffered during missions against air bases.
In the process, JP233 became one of the U.K.'s most significant conventional weapons programmes and exercised a great influence on the fortunes of several of its largest defence companies — including Hunting Engineering, Royal Ordnance, FR Group, and ML Holdings.
There is no suggestion that the JP233 bomb — rejected by the USAF in favour of the French-made Durandel cratering bomb — has performed anything other than well.

The JP233 was removed from use because it was considered a pilot-killer.

The events of 1991 are foretold in this powerful portrayal of a Tornado taking off in a blast of steam from a rain drenched runway, with a Jaguar strike/attack aircraft breaking into the circuit background.

JP233 (british weapon btw) is a double whammy sort of weapon, it consist of a dispensor mounted under the AC (RAF Tornados in modern times) that drops two types of bomblets, one is a rocket propelled cratering charge the other is a anti-personel/material mine to stop the engineers from fixing the airfield quickly.
