This was to be the Martin Mars, a 140,000-pound behemoth that was the largest plane in the U.S. military inventory until the arrival of the B-36 intercontinental bomber in 1947.
The Mars was originally conceived as a "sky battleship" or "flying Dreadnought," armed with multiple gun turrets, capable of flying long distances with huge bombloads (and Marine paratroopers as well).
The Marianas Mars crashed in an accident in 1961, and the Caroline Mars was destroyed in a hurricane a year later - but as they approached age 40 both the Philippine and Hawaii Mars were still flying.

The JRM Mars was the production development of the XPB2M1-R. 20 were ordered the first of which flew in the summer of 1945, The fourth JRM-1 in summer 1946 and the fifth JRM-2 in the fall of 1947.
The fifth Martin JRM Mars was installed with (4) Pratt and Whitney R-4630 (3000 HP) Wasp Major radials but was later retrofitted with the Wright R3350-24WA radials (2500 HP) to be compatible with the fleet.

The first was delivered in June 1945, but with the end of the war the Navy cut their order to only five additional aircraft for a total of six in all, with the last one delivered in 1947.
Each Mars carries 600 US gallons (2,270 litres) of foam concentrate - enough for 21 drops of a 0.4% solution which is the standard used, although it may be decided to use more or less foam as dictated by the Incident Commander.
The Mars are also equipped to deliver Thermo-Gel which when mixed with water forms a light gel by encapsulating the water droplets.

The Mars was designed during World War II, only a handful were ever built, but over 40 years later, the aircraft still soldiers on, fighting forest fires.
The powerplants were upgraded to 2,400 horsepower R-3350-8 engines, the twin-tail was replaced by a tall single vertical tail, large cargo doors with electric hoists were installed under the wings with smaller cargo doors placed farther aft, and the internal layout was optimized for cargo and transport operations.
Five more Mars flying boats were completed instead: the Philippine Mars, the Marianas Mars, the Marshall Mars, a second Hawaii Mars, and the single JRM-2, the Caroline Mars, delivered in July 1947 and equipped with 3,000 HP Pratt and Whitney R-4360-4T engines.

As we go to press, one of two Martin JRM Mars flying boats operated by Forest Industries Flying Tankers will be departing its scenic base at Sproat Lake, Vancouver Island, on 16 June and heading south to Long Beach, California, where it will land near the historic Queen Mary.
The two Mars are magnificent survivors of the era of four-engine flying boats and, incredibly, these aircraft are still regularly and efficiently earning their keep by fighting fires on lands owned by a consortium of Canadian logging companies.
To all enthusiasts of historic aircraft, this is quite an exciting move and the massive Mars will prove to be a powerful deterrent to fires since its huge load of water can "lall" the head of a roaring fire.

At the time the Mars was built it was the world's largest flying boat, though only six examples were ever built.
In 1959 the largest flying boats to have ever served with the U.S. Navy were all sold to Canada for use as fire-fighting water bombers, where some still remain in use some forty years later.
