The JSE Limited (previously the Johannesburg Securities Exchange) is the largest stock exchange in Africa.
The JSE is planning to create a pan-African exchange by initially enabling investors to trade in shares from Ghana, Namibia, Zimbabwe and Zambia.
Out of this the JSE Securities Exchange was born on November 8, 1887.

JSE is a licensed, privately-owned securities and derivatives exchange located in South Africa and subject to regulation by the South African Financial Services Board (“FSB”).
The FSB is the regulatory authority tasked with ensuring that the JSE operates its stock and derivatives markets in the public interest and in accordance with the legislation governing the operation of stock and derivatives exchanges in South Africa.
JSE lists for trading the four nearest months of the March quarterly cycle, and the last trading day for the contract is the third Thursday of the delivery month.

The JSE has a well equipped and staffed Surveillance Division that watches market activity to ensure exchange rules are upheld, capital adequacy requirements of members are in place and trading takes place in a well ordered manner.
A client on the exchange is covered by the dispute resolution mechanism and has the right to approach the exchange in terms of the rules if he/she is of the opinion that the member concerned has not correctly carried out its duties.

AltX, a partnership between the JSE Securities Exchange and the department of trade and industry (DTI), will give a range of smaller companies the opportunity to issue new shares, raise capital, widen their investor base and have their shares traded in a regulated market.
