The Pratt and Whitney JT8D is a low-bypass (0.96 to 1) turbofan jet engine, introduced by Pratt and Whitney in February 1964 with the inaugural flight of Boeing's 727.
Eight models comprise the JT8D standard engine family cover the thrust range from 14,000 to 17,400 pounds-force (62 to 77 kN) and power 727, 737-100/200, and DC-9 aircraft.

That is why I believe Pratt & Whittney made a turbo fan version of the J-52 turbo jet which the JT8D is, because the 727 had to be quieter and have shorter take off time than the 707.

Douglas launched the DC-9 development project in April 1963, intending the DC-9 as a short-range companion to their larger four engined DC-8.
Unlike the competing but slightly larger Boeing 727, which used as many 707 components as possible, the DC-9 was an all-new design, using two rear fuselage-mounted Pratt and Whitney JT8D turbofan engines, a small, highly efficient wing, and a T-tail.

The JT8D (and other low-bypass turbofans and turbojet engines) sucks the air in at a higher velocity than a high-bypass engine with comparable thrust output, like the CFM-56.
The big fan on the high-bypass engine makes up for the lower velocity by moving a larger volume of air, and a benefit of that is less noise.
On turbojets and early turbofans, such as the JT8D, the compressor blades spin very fast right next to the stationary vanes.

While Pratt and Whitney will be responsible for delivering the JT8D-219 engines, SQS will supply the propulsion pods, which includes the struts, cowl doors, inlets, reversers and systems, in collaboration with its key suppliers Goodrich Corporation and The Nordam Group.
According to Pratt and Whitney's William Begert, vice president, international programs and business development, with minor modifications the JT 8D-219 engine is an "incredibly versatile solution for other Boeing 707-based aircraft." The commercial-off-the-shelf, FAA-certified JT8D propulsion system is currently operating on the Boeing 727, 737, and MD 80 aircraft.
According to Pratt and Whitney, the JT8D-219 JSTARS configuration is a fuel-efficient power system that allows a 20 per cent improvement in fuel consumption, thereby increasing the time on-station for JSTARS aircraft in their surveillance orbit.

The engines were moved forward and raised, level with the upper surface of the wing and tilted 5 degrees up which not only helped the ground clearance but also directed the exhaust downwards which reduced the effects of pylon overheating and gave some vectored thrust to assist take-off performance.
There is also a second drain tube that does not protrude located on the inside of the fairing.
The original thrust reversers were totally redesigned by Boeing and Rohr since the aircraft had inherited the same internal pneumatically powered clamshell thrust reversers as the 727 which were relatively ineffective and apparently tended to lift the aircraft off the runway when deployed!
