JTD engine - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
JTD is Fiat's term for its common rail turbocharged diesel engines.
Ownership of the Fiat JTD design is shared with General Motors as part of a settlement of the failed merger between the two auto conglomerates.
The most common JTD engine is the 1.9 L straight-4 found in the Fiat Punto, Fiat Stilo and Fiat Croma.

The Ducato 15 MWB is available with 2.0 JTD and 2.3 JTD engines; the latter unit is also used in the MWB Hi-Roof and the Big Volume.
The new 2.3 JTD engine produces 110bhp (81kW) at 3600rpm and max torque of 270 Nm (27.5kgm) is available at 1800rpm.
The Fiat JTD engines need an oil/filter change only every 40,000 km compared with 10,000km for previous Ducatos and the timing belt requires replacement after 240,000km compared to 120,000 km previously.

The 1.9 JTD power unit is fitted with an oxidising catalytic converter that uses excess air present in exhaust emissions to burn carbon monoxide and unburnt hydrocarbons.
The engines were specially selected to adapt to this car's innovative brief: a car that is easy to drive, comfortable, dynamically safe, with respect for the environment and designed today for traffic conditions of tomorrow.
On the hybrid Fiat Multipla, the internal combustion engine is petrol-driven (the 76 kW 1.6 16v Torque unit) and the electric motor is triple phase and asynchronous (30 kW).

The 5 cylinder jtd I think does need the engine removing for a cam belt change (there may be fiat specialists that can do it without) and it needs changing every 3 years and 36k.
This engine doesn't have to be removed on the 156 for a cambelt change but I can't speak for the Marea (although it's a similar size and layout).
JTD change interval is 72K, Petrol is 60K.

The system, as it appears on the new Fiat Brava 1.9 litre JTD 105 engine, consists of a small pump immersed in the fuel tank which delivers diesel oil to the primary (high pressure) pump (driven by the timing belt), which continuously 'pushes' diesel oil into the accumulator.
The 1.9 JTD engine is turbocharged by a Garrett T15 turbine with wastegate valve (to eliminate part of the exhaust gas energy loss at high speeds) and intercooler.
The engine is also equipped with a two-mass engine flywheel (one half built into the crankshaft, the other into the main shaft).

The newcomer is available in two body/engine configurations: the 2.3 JTD and the 2.8 JTD, the latter features an extended wheelbase and a raised roof.
The secret that allows this engine to achieve normally incompatible results (high performance and low fuel consumption) lies in its electronically-managed high pressure Common Rail injection system that ensures optimum power unit operation at all rpms through control of the various parameters.
The 2.8 JTD Common Rail direction injection engine with intercooler owes its place at the top of the Ducato range to its generous maximum torque and power performance.

 new alfa 156
This is the first petrol engine from Alfa Romeo on which the injectors work directly in the combustion chamber.
Alfa Romeo's approach was to exploit the direct injection concept to increase engine power and torque first and foremost, thus adapting this technology to the requirements of a sportier car, while adopting the stratified charge method to cut consumption in a limited speed band, close to idling.
Compared to the 2.0 Twin Spark, and other direct injection petrol engines currently available, the 2.0 JTS in the new Alfa 156 provides marginally lower fuel consumption combined with an impressive increase in power and torque: +15 bhp and +18 lb ft of torque.
