Horror fiction - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Horror fiction often overlaps with science fiction and/or fantasy, all of which have been placed under the umbrella category speculative fiction.
Modern horror fiction found its roots in the gothic novels that exploded into popularity in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, typified by Ann Radcliffe's The Mysteries of Udolpho and Horace Walpole's The Castle of Otranto.
Horror fiction is, broadly, fiction in any media intended to scare, unsettle or horrify the reader.

 Horror
Horror can be thought of as the feeling of dread and anticipation that occurs before something frightening is seen or otherwise experienced (terror is the feeling that follows after the experience has occurred).

 Horror Films
Horror films, when done well and with less reliance on horrifying special effects, can be extremely potent film forms, tapping into our dream states and the horror of the irrational and unknown, and the horror within man himself.
Horror films are often combined with science fiction when the menace or monster is related to a corruption of technology, or when Earth is threatened by aliens.
The earliest horror pictures, now-forgotten "vamp" pictures (films featuring devilish captivating ladies) in one-reel or full length features, were produced in the US from 1909 to the early 1920s, making the horror genre one of the oldest and most basic.

Children of a Darker God: A Taxonomy of Deep Horror Fiction and Film and Their Mass Popularity
The rape-murder of his wife by a masked husband in the film Jagged Edge (1985) is a distillation of deep horror's anonymous, nonredemptive sundering of all things human: spirit, soul, inner being, love, intimacy, and body.
For others, deep horror communicates an exulted return to the primitive, lawless jungle where irritations and insecurities are resolved through mayhem and the wild hunts of vigilantes.
Deep horror is not the scion of the art of Poe and his fellows; rather, it descends from the popular spectacle of the public execution.

 Queer Horror
Whether this horror comes in the form of blame for society's woes, laws preventing us from living a normal life, rejection by family or friends for being who we are, or religiously sponsored hate crimes, no queer person is unaffected by the horrific.
By many homophobes, we are seen as the villains in horror; corrupting families, spreading plagues and destroying the moral fabric of society.
However, we know ourselves to be much more the heros in horror, trying to fight to overcome almost impossible odds while always knowing that there is an evil presence out there that wishes to destroy us, no matter what the cost.

Horror Movies - Reviews and News - HorrorExpress.com
But horror fans were a tad upset when Andrew was not brought on for the prequel, since many deemed him a fine Leatherface.
In the 1990s, the horror genre experienced one of its most polarizing booms in a resurgence of the slasher film.
Usually the next big thing is the same old thing, which is why horror is big money for the studios about once a decade before they throw the genre to the wolves and treat it like an unwanted stepchild.

 Memento Vivere :: Horror
Horror is still very much under-appreciated as a book genre, in my opinion, but the popularity of it in the visual media is making me a bit worried that just as horror is taking off again it might be, well, done to death in the public's eye before it really has a chance to shine.
In the nighties, psychological horror was all the rage.
There were actually quite a few horror films in the 90's, but they weren't as recognized or thrown together in the huge pot of infamous boogeymen we had grown so familiar with in the eighties.

 Horror Hosts "Ghost To Ghost"
Horror host, San Guinary, was a staple of local TV for a number of years and the locals grew nostalgic for it.
Some may say that the hosted horror film program is a thing of the past, but there has been a steady growth of horror hosts around the world in the past few years.
Even though he is a newcomer in the horror host neighborhood, he has the potential to run a long time (or at least until the villagers catch him).

Milwaukee TV Horror Hosts Home Crypt
Since horror films were working on Saturday nights for the other two independent stations in town, it purchased a package of films, and ran it as "Monster Mania".
In many cases, the history of television horror in the Milwaukee market is interwoven with the history of Milwaukee television.
In the 1950's horror films were released to television, and it was natural for local stations to show them on a regular, weekly program - often with a host.

 Horror (2002)
This is not a Hollywood horror film, so it might not have all of the fancy CG effects that some of you are used to (but who really wants CG anyway?) the effects that this does have however work great with the movie.
This is one of the best horror movies to come out of the new millenium, Dante Tomaselli is a great Director, and I think we can expect much more from him in the future (or at least I hope so).
This film is a must for true horror fans and I am sure that it will become a cult classic one day.

The Dungeon of Horrors is Darcy’s summer home, but the fun turns to terror when real bodies are found with the mark of a vampire on their throats.

Horror Writers Association - Stoker Awards
Since all works of Horror published in a given year are automatically eligible for the awards, and since the entire membership of HWA is involved in the awards process, there is no way to submit works for consideration per se.
Any work of Horror first published in the English language may be considered for a Stoker during the year of its publication.
In addition, Lifetime Achievement Stokers are occasionally presented to individuals whose entire body of work has substantially influenced Horror.

The Horror Channel :: It's gonna be a MONSTER!!!
One of our goals for The Horror Channel is to give independent filmmakers a voice and avenue to have their features shown and get some exposure.
Horror comes in many forms, whether supernatural or through the cruelty of human beings.
It takes a great deal of talent to combine several elements of horror into a cohesive story, and still more to make that story resonate and disturb at the reader's core level.

They're coming to get you, Barbara! Horror movie reviews -- good, bad, classic, and current
Not only is it not at all a horror movie (Shame on you, Wes Craven!) it's terrible even for what it is, which is a completely banal action/suspense movie.
And there's plenty to gawk at (although they did have to blur out the obscene mosaics for TV broadcast), which convinced me that filmmakers ought to look to Rome for horror movie inspiration.
I mean, they had a bit about a senator who kept a huge pool of eels at his villa, into which he used to throw disobedient slaves, leaving them to be slowly and painfully gnawed to death.

 Mexican Horror Movies
In it's orginal form this was a horror comedy with comic Tin Tan and Lon Chaney Jr as a mummy who is brought to life and turns out to be the mummy of a werewolf.
Many of these had atmosphere and copy the mood of the old Universal horror films of the 40's but the plots were often weird.
The Nostradamus series of vampire movies were at first produced as a ten part horror serial.

Horror of Buried.com - Joe Lansdale Interview
Ultimately for a horror novel to be horror it has to be about scaring the reader, and that can be true of a mystery or suspense novel, but not always.
You can't very well create the atmosphere for a horror novel if you don't have a sense of mystery, and you can't create the feel of terror you need for a mystery novel if you don't have a sense of horror.
Suspense is a broader field that can also contain horror, and you can in fact write a horror/suspense novel.

 The Vault---The Best in Horror!!!
Most were based in the modern era of horror and this in no way diminishes the importance of other classic horror films.
I'd do a page about myself, but who wants to know about me? Finally, I decided to provide horror fans with a resource, which would put at their fingertips information on some of my—and hopefully some of your—favorite horror movies.
I'd do a page dedicated to Evil Dead, but there are quite a few out there, most of which are very good.

My two stories up at Horror Quarterly #3 are Bug Chaser (co-written with Hertzan Chimera, originally published in CHIM + HER anthology,) and a brand new story entitled The Blood Blog.

It's this device that ensures that The Blair Witch Project will survive, not only as a great horror film, but also as an organic criticism of a generation raised on television, a generation that seems to only experience reality through a lens piece, screen, or tube.
The documentary's director, Heather Donahue, continues to film in the midst of the most terrifying of circumstances, attempting to keep a photo-journalist's detachment from the events around her, right up to the last frame.
