A brief overview of Jüri Ehlvest
Ehlvest’s short stories began appearing as early as the second half of the 1980s; his first book was published in 1996.
Despite their many layers and voices, Ehlvest’s stories are not polyphonic or symphonic, they rather resemble a radio concert, with constant interruptions from other stations, whereas these different stations seem to actually hear one another and occasionally adjust their programmes to the others.
Ehlvest’s peculiarity mostly lies in his playing about with the reading habits of the short story genre (novels are no exception here, because Still in Baghdad is actually a collection of short story excerpts joined into a frame-story, and Elli’s Flight a short story stretched into a novel).

Chessville - Reviews - The Story of a Chess Player - by Jaan Ehlvest - Reviewed by Rick Kennedy
In his writing Ehlvest is prone more to reflection than rage against the machine – and this adds more to the reading experience, as he is a trained psychologist (although I do not know exactly what that means, beyond his field of study), and a guy with some occasionally rather quirky thoughts.
Born in 1962, the child of two physicians, Ehlvest grew up on a farm, went to chess school, progressed as a Junior, made it to the Botvinnik Chess School and was soon on his way to becoming an International Master in 1983 and a Grandmaster in 1987.
The only rancor I recall is when Ehlvest reports the time that Dvoretsky had said he was no good in the endgame – and even that seemed to be more feelings of hurt than anything.
