 Do Bigha Zameen
Bimal Roy with his innate reserve and good taste chooses a much wider context in which to place his narrative thus looking at rural poverty at one end and the brutalizing effects of city life at the other end.
Do Bigha Zameen is a sad and moving tale which Roy projects with much sympathy, understatement and simplicity and gives us a film that is very human and has great emotional depth.
The film is strongly influenced by the Italian neo-realist Cinema and particularly evokes De Sica's masterpiece Bicycle Thief (1949) particularly in the scenes of the father and son in the city.

Balraj Sahni almost lost out on the lead role in 'Do Bigha Zameen.' Bimal Roy wondered whether his sophisticated looks and polished westernised self would be able to interpret the role of a poor peasant.
One of the key films of our golden age in cinema, 'Do Bigha Zameen' is arguably also the only Bombay film from that period which can be proudly placed among the contemporary world classics.
'Do Bigha Zameen' is the story of a poor peasant Shambhu who is in danger of losing his small plot of land to the village moneylender.

I am speaking of Jaane Bhi Do Yaaron, a small NFDC film created by a bunch of enthusiasts with all that they had in terms of creativity and resources.
Irrespective of its commercial fate, it was a universal hit: it grew beyond the realms of art and commercial cinema and is unanimously loved by one and all.
JBDY is undoubtedly the best comedy ever made, it was perfect not only because it was funny but also because it was an intelligent film...

Kundan Shah's hilarious masterpiece 'Jaane Bhi Do Yaaron,' initially categorised (condemned rather!) as an art film was seen by a handful of people when it was first released in cinema halls.
What I do know is that I have seen the film more than ten times, and I am willing to watch it another ten times.
Universal appeal is earned by substance, and for all the farce and slapstick that dominates JBDY, it is also one of the most meaningful and hard-hitting satires modern India has ever produced.

So in retrospective JBDY seems to be a masterpiece which it is!!Not that this film lacked the slapstick, but in here the slapstick was made to be a satirical one.
FYI, despite its flaws, and despite being largely written under the influence of high quality (and totally Indian) Cannabis, JBDY is a genuine satire, biting and spot on.

It wouldn't be far-fetched to state that Kundan Shah's 'Jaane Bhi Do Yaaron' is one of Indian cinema's most absorbing fl comedies.
Apart from the racy narrative that plunges from one hilarious scene into another, 'Jaane Bhi Do Yaaron' has excellent dialogues that give Shah's bitter pill a sugar coating to make it palatable.
Be it Satish Shah in the role of a stiff corpse being dragged around all over the place, Om Puri as a drunk and pompous builder, Pankaj Kapoor as the ruthless Tarneja or Bhakti Barve's cunning Shobha.
