From a high point near Jabal Sawda, the pipeline descends as it continues north, and then enters the gently rising Hamadah al Hamra gravel plain, where underlying limestone deposits and volcanic sheets of lava are frequently dissected by wadis draining northeast to the sea.
South of Jabal Fezzan, the Murzuk basin extends from the Qargaf Arch in the north to beyond the south western borders of Libya.
North of Jabal Fezzan, the Hamadah and Jufrah basins extend from the Qargaf Arch and Jabal Sawda to the coast.

The Kufra basin, lying in the south east, near the Egyptian border, covers an area of 350,000km², forming an aquifer layer over 2,000m deep, with an estimated capacity of 20,000km³ in the Libyan sector.
The 600m-deep aquifer in the Sirt basin is estimated to hold over 10,000km³ of water, while the 450,000km² Murzuk basin, south of Jabal Fezzan, is estimated to hold 4,800km³.
Further water lies in the Hamadah and Jufrah basins, which extend from the Qargaf Arch and Jabal Sawda to the coast.

The Ar Ruwaydah pegmatite dikes occur in Abt schist and appear to have been affected by metamorphism and deformation related to the post-Murdama granite intrusion of Jabal Za‘abah.
However, the preferential location of the pegmatite dikes around the granitic massif could indicate that some, at least, are the differentiated products of this intrusion.
The Jabal Sawda’ pluton is about 2 km in diameter and ranges in composition from alkali-feldspar syenite to nepheline syenite, with marked variations in the content of ferromagnesian minerals.
