  Peer-to-Peer: Chapter 6: Jabber
Jabber was designed from the get-go for peer conversations, both P-P and particularly A-A, and for real-time as well as asynchronous/offline conversations.
Jabber is simply a set of common technologies that all of these projects agree on collaboratively when building tools for peer-to-peer systems.
Jabber is thus reduced to serving as a conduit between peers.

Jabber is a set of protocols expressed in XML, and an extensible framework that allows people and applications to exchange all sorts of information, from simple text messages to being used to extend the backbone of an enterprise data system.
Jabber was first conceived by Jeremie Miller (pic) in early 1998 in an effort to unify the disparate instant messaging networks.
I think equal time should be given to implementing Jabber using the 2 most used languages, as defined by the number and activity of open source projects using Jabber technology.

 Jabber - a definition from Whatis.com
Jabber is an initiative to produce an open source, XML-based instant messaging platform.
Similar to the Linux and Apache projects, Jabber developers volunteer their time to work with the code over the Internet.
Jabber operates differently than other proprietary instant messaging systems and works in a fashion similar to e-mail, using a distributed architecture.

OpenP2P.com -- Installing the Jabber Server
Installations of earlier versions (1.0, 1.2) of the Jabber server were often complex affairs, and while the installation process has become much more straightforward, some people still shrink back from installing and configuring their own.
Jabber server Version 1.4.1 is the one we will obtain and install here, and this will be used as the server for the recipes in the rest of this book.
The general idea is that the Jabber server will be compiled and run from wherever you decide to unpack it; that is, there is no separate "install" step.

Ursine:Jabber - Ursine   (Site not responding. Last check: )
Jabber is an open source instant messaging platform that uses open, XML-based protocols to create the standard functionality people expect of an IM system: one-to-one chat, multi-user chat, the ability to subscribe to someone else's presence, and so on.
Jabber is not a multi-protocol IM client, so if all you want to do is chat with your friends on AIM, ICQ, MSN, and Yahoo, you may be better off using something like Trillian or Gaim (which also support Jabber).
The public server that the Jabber Software Foundation runs here at jabber.org is a favorite choice, but there are plenty of other public Jabber servers to choose from (refer to http://www.jabber.org/user/publicservers.php for a directory of public Jabber servers).

 Support.Jabber.com
In a service provider or intranet setting, Jabber, Inc. recommends that a Jabber server be located behind a firewall, with only the necessary ports open (by default, these are 5222 for client-to-server sockets and 5269 for server-to-server sockets).
If you would like to connect together multiple Jabber servers on a closed network, all of the servers should be behind the same firewall, with access to those servers over port 5269 closed off.
This system was introduced in version 1.2 of the Jabber open-source server and is enforced by Jabber, Inc.'s SCM component (i.e., SCM does not accept connections from Jabber servers that do not adhere to the server dialback protocol defined at http://docs.jabber.org/draft-proto/html/dialback.html).

Jabber - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Jabber is a collection of open, real-time communication technologies built on the Extensible Messaging and Presence Protocol (XMPP).
Jabber servers may be isolated from the public Jabber network (e.g., on a company intranet), and robust security (via SASL and TLS) has been built into the core XMPP specifications.
Any Jabber user can "register" with one of these gateways by providing the information needed to log on to that network, and can then communicate with users of that network as though they were Jabber users.
