DVD Review - Jabberwocky   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-06)
Director Terry Gilliam began work on "Jabberwocky" very soon after the completion of the classic "Monty Python and the Holy Grail." As both films are set in medieval times and feature cast members from the Monty Python troupe, comparisons between the two are inevitable.
"Jabberwocky" is a wonderful comedy and as the first film directed solo by Terry Gilliam it exhibits many of the hallmarks that have made his cinematic forays so enjoyable.
But the included commentary track is very good and seeing this film in widescreen for the first time is rewarding enough that I feel safe in recommending the DVD to fans of Terry Gilliam and Monty Python.

 DVD Review: Jabberwocky
While "Jabberwocky" isn't nearly as packed with sight gags and verbal humor, there are some funny one-liners.
Also in the picture's favor is the set design, which is impressively gloomy and drab, considering the film only had a minor budget to work with.
The film has not particularly stood up well to the test of time, as some very noticable wear is visible in various forms throughout; a light layer of grain is persistently apparent throughout, as are instances of specks, dirt and other marks on the print used.

Thematically this action is a durable metaphor in film, a staging of temporary freedom from vices and disturbances that bear numerous incarnations.
The film was co-financed between Columbia Pictures and completion guarantor Film Finances, incurring an estimated final budget of 45 million; it was said to be the most expensive film of the time (4).
Filming was impeded instantaneously by several hindrances, foremost was flooding in a Spain location shoot and an ailing Jean Rochefort cast as the title character.

Jabberwocky (film) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Jabberwocky (1977) is a comic medieval film by Monty Python's resident animator, Terry Gilliam.
The film, Gilliam's first as a solo director, was not well-received by critics or audiences, although it has since become something of a cult film.
The narrator of the film's trailer warns that it is so terrifying "No one will be admitted to the theatre until the last ten minutes of (the) film".

The city is somewhat under siege by the vicious Jabberwock(y), a beast influenced by Lewis Carrol's doggerel poem of the same name.
Dennis, in the time-honoured tradition, is ultimately required to rid the city of the threat and accordingly claim half of King Bruno the Questionable's creaking kingdom and the hand in marriage of his beautiful daughter, notwithstanding the dubious but apparently lingering attractions of 'Greasy' Griselda.
Jabberwocky is less well known than the pure Python films, but none the worse for that.

 DVD Verdict Review - Jabberwocky
This is Jabberwocky, an intermittently humorous film with a touch of horror that has been burned onto a disc with some modest extra content and a competent technical presentation.
However, the drawback of Jabberwocky is that it is likely to be a minor disappointment to those who are fans of his cinematic style, as it is to those who might be expecting another Monty Python film.
Not quite a Gilliam film, not quite a Python film, Jabberwocky is a lukewarm compromise more interesting than it is funny or dramatic as the story limps to a conclusion.

 Jabberwocky (1977)
In fact, the only note I wrote to myself as I watched the film was “foul!” The level of grime is perversely admirable in a way, for it goes even farther than Grail to present a medieval reality far from the sanitized pearly whites of most Hollywood renditions.
As for those possible charms, some of them exist, but Jabberwocky seems like a minor effort in the Gilliam pantheon; to be certain, it definitely doesn’t live up to the levels reached by many of his later works.
Jabberwocky appears in both an aspect ratio of approximately 1.85:1 and in a fullscreen version on this double-sided, single-layered DVD; the widescreen image has been enhanced for 16X9 televisions.

Jabberwocky features superb performances by not only its star whose character's wide-eyed naivety makes him the perfect foil, but by Max Wall portraying the bumbling King Bruno the Questionable, John Le Mesurier playing the manipulative Chamberlain, Warren Mitchell as the wheeler-dealer Mr.
The film's theme -- a good and pure soul, for romantic ideals, at first hesitant then resolutely confronting the forces of ill -- foreshadows Gilliams's 1985 masterpiece Brazil in its portrayal of dogged innocence facing institutional corruption.
Thus Jabberwocky holds one's interest as a milestone in the unfolding development of a filmmaker with a unique and delightfully warped vision and as a rewarding cinematic experience in its own right.

It's hard to tell what the vision behind "Jabberwocky" was, but it came across as a limp spinoff of "Monty Python and the Holy Grail." It has the same grimy, icky medieval look, klunky knights and abundance of filthy beggars, but it doesn't manage to be similarly hilarious.
Jabberwocky is a terrific film in every way: funny, smart, visually involving, and wonderfully acted and directed.
This first film of Terry Gilliam is often mistaken for a Monty Python film because Michael Palin stars (and possibly also because of the surface similarity to Monty Python and the Holy Grail), but the humor comes from entirely different and more complex sources than anything Python.

This being said, the film is funny in a dark way while serving as a commentary on medieval life, commerce, and bureaucracy.
In this film though, the plot wanders here and there and I would often wonder when things where going to happen.
This film is funny and has a few really hilarious moments as when the King tells the Princess that she can have her bridal sweet in the south tower, which soon after crumbles in front of their eyes.

The film Jabberwocky, made in 1977 by Terry Gilliam, didn't follow the plot of the poem very well, but it did have a good monster.
Jabberwocky might never have been made if Terry Gilliam had been able to use a dragon, as he'd wanted, when making Monty Python and The Holy Grail.

Gilliam was purposefully trying to distance himself from the troupe and felt that the film was too dark and serious to be called a Monty Python film, that American audiences would go in expecting more of a farce.
Michael Palin give a fine performance as Dennis Cooper (the son of a barrel maker or cooper, not the rock star) a down on his luck, anti-hero who is hopelessly in love with Griselda who is as unpleasant as her name suggests.
Perhaps this is because Jabberwocky is a different style of film than Monty Python and the Holy Grain and their other famous movies.

Corbett's Robert Newtonesque rogue is the film's high spot, embracing the ethos of the film's filth obsession with vigour and having a whale of a time over-acting, storming through the action with flashing grin and ready wit.
A film of total extremes, there is too much filth all over the shop but Gilliam's artistic style pulls it off, contrasting beautifully filmed silhouetted compositions juxtaposed with images of arse-scratching and shitting out of windows.

He started forging his personal identity with his first film after co-directing "Monty Python And The Holy Grail: "Jabberwocky." Dennis Cooper (Michael Palin, who plays him with eyes that are kept permanently wide-open and vacuous, and an optimism to match) is apprenticed to his father, a barrel-maker who lives in the middle of a swamp.
Most of this film is sorely underlit and drab; in the commentary track, Gilliam often mentions that a scene was shot just as or just after they were losing the light.
When the film was made on a shoestring budget, that's good for another 25%; you can anticipate lots of stories about raiding other productions' dumpsters for sets and props, for instance.

This comes across well in the film because it is Kevin who has the "ability to imagine and wonder and be amazed" (Sulski 46) and therefore will be able to cope without parents (he already has, for the most part).
This is mostly due to the fact that the film has, yet again, a rather controversial ending, but one which is essential to the meaning of the film.
