Within the Scolopaci he placed the jacanas (Jacanidae and related taxa) as a sister taxon to the rest of the clade, and the seedsnipes (Thinocoridae) as a sister taxon to the scolopacine waders.
For the Charadrii he placed the larids as a sister taxon to the rest of the clade, which consisted of an unresolved polytomy of glareolids and coursers (Glareoli- dae), thick-knees (Burhinidae), the crab plover (Dromas), and the charadriine waders including avocets and allies (Fig.

RHEGMINORNIS RESTUDIED: A TINY MIOCENE TURKEY
The only fossil form referred to the Jacanidae is the Miocene Rhegminorns calobates Wetmore (1943), described from a distal end of a right tarsometa- tarsus.
The scar for the hallux is not as deep; the distal foramen is not located as far distally, is oval rather than circular, and is much smaller, with a much shallower outer extensor groove than in the Jacanidae.
The measure- ments of the type are: width through trochleae 9.5 mm; depth of middle trochlea 4.6; least depth of shaft 2.9; least width of shaft 3.9; overall length of specimen 29.6.

Linear sequence of families in Charadriiformes
: Our current sequence of families in the Charadriiformes is a conventional one, with "kind-of-rail-like" families first (Jacanidae + Rostratulidae), followed by the "shorebird" families, and ending with the "gull-like" families.
(1) the Charadriiformes consists of three major groups: (1) the Scolopaci [Scolopacidae, Thinocoridae, Pedionomidae, Rostratulidae, and Jacanidae]; (2) the Charadrii [Charadriidae, Recurvirostridae, Haematopodidae, Burhinidae, and Chionidae]; and (3) the Lari [Laridae, Rynchopidae, Stercorariidae, Alcidae, and Glareolidae].
(2) Jacanidae and Rostratulidae are sister families (consistent with our current sequence as well as Sibley and Ahlquist).

Because of the difficulty of eating mollusks, parent oystercatchers have to teach their method of "sneaking" or "hammering" to their young.
Jacanas (Family Jacanidae) all have very long toes that allow them to walk on top of floating plants.
Except for one species, a female jacana's only contribution to nesting is to lay eggs.

Charadriiformes, Burhinidae, Charadriidae, Haematopodidae, Recurvirostridae, Jacanidae, Scolopacidae, Glareolidae, Laridae, Alcidae, and allies.
Charadriiformes is a diverse assemblage of forms which may constitute the wellspring of the Tertiary neornithine adaptive radiation, although the phylogenetic position of this order and its transitional-mosaic forms from the terminal Cretaceous/Paleocene-Eocene period ("graculavids" sensu Olson 1985), vis-a-vis the neognathous neornithines, remains uncertain.
