Jack Bristow - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Jack Bristow, a longtime agent of the CIA and former double agent with SD6, is often emotionally distant and can be among the show's coldest and most brutal characters.
Not accepting this verdict, Jack subsequently began a painful regimen of blood filtering treatments in order to delay the inevitable, and appeared to be experiencing memory loss related to medication; he was also puzzled by the appearance of a mysterious implant in his hand, which his doctor said was designed to regulate the anti-radiation medication.
Jack Bristow died in the line of duty, to prevent Arvin Sloane (who had apparently become immortal) from escaping the tomb of Milo Rambaldi.

Jack found the brightly wrapped box in his bag; it was a big one this time, since Laura had known the trip would be long.
Bristow, you're aware of what your husband does for a living, correct?" He had learned after talking to her on Friday that he had been assigned as Laura Bristow's physician because he had clearance-low level, but clearance nonetheless.
Jack must have realized it, too, because she heard the slight rustling of movement, and then felt a slight twitch of the IV tube against her skin.

Jack stared at the horrible scene unfolding before his eyes — once more he was frozen, unable to react, as if his quick reflexes had fled him at this time of critical need.
Jack closed his eyes, and everything in his mind dissolved to nothing at the sound of Vaughn's voice, the helplessness of his words, his plain cry for protection from something too horrible to imagine.

Jack Bristow was probably trying to do the same, except his methods of avoiding memories of Irina’s last moments resulted in becoming rather chatty.
Jack sat straighter in his chair, the barb causing a slight twitch of his lips, which Sark interpreted as an attempt at a smile of some sort.
Jack cleared his throat and waited for Sark to resume eye contact before continuing, “As I was saying, your handler is taking the rather unorthodox step of flying to Havana for a meet before your final mission.

Jack and Irina reminisce about burning toast, one time when they were married, so badly the house had to be vacated for a week.
As Jack readies himself to open the grain bin, to acknowledge that the woman inside is the same woman that he married thirty years ago, perhaps there is a lingering hope that some metamorphosis has remade her into something that he can understand.
And as Jack prepares himself to let Irina out, he takes that last moment to tell Sydney that he's proud of her, as though he's terrified that in the end, Laura Bristow's return will be his dismantling.

The cat makes perfect sense to me. As we saw with 1981 Jack, it is in his true nature to be kind and caring (and didn't Irina basically describe him that way when she saw him for the first time in season two?), he's just been suppressing it and stomping it down all these years.
Jack always keeps a tight lid on his emotions, and I think Sydney was doing the same thing during this last episode.
Jack could have made a fortune (and maybe he did), but he was never in the business for personal gain.

As poor old Syd struggled with her secretive vocation, there were constant reminders that it was Jack who taught his first grader to take apart an AK-47 and more or less doomed her to a life of donning eccentric wigs and infiltrating Berlin S/M clubs in the name of saving the free world.
Which makes Jack and Sydney more or less the perfect couple: resisting temptation is the only thing that makes narrative sense (well, unless they're subject to mind-altering drugs that make them forget who they are, which, in the improbable world of Alias, is likely to be the season three cliff-hanger).
Jack's familial bond with Syd opens the door for all kinds of behaviour that, from a lover or friend, would count as fearsomely obnoxious.

Jack's haste to substantiate counterfeit evidence in his defense, his rushed handling of documents and strangely out-of-context objects, was spectacular, as was Kendall's sarcastic "I just got off the phone with the director again, and he asked me, again, if I knew we were in the intelligence business."

Part of the reason that I wanted to run this fanlisting was that I think Sydney and Jack symbolizes a typical father/daughter relationship, but obviously taken to the extreme.
Jack has been an absent father, and Sydney has throughout her childhood idolized her mother (until she finds out the truth about her that is).
When Sydney learns who her father really is, she has to start from scratch, and they slowly but surely develop a brand new relationship, that is built on trust, understanding and a healthy dose of guilt on both sides.
