Britton was a great fighter with not only good power but excellent boxing skills to go along with the power.
One of Britton's more famous bouts had him losing to Benny Leonard but he so enraged Leonard that he struck him while he was down and was disqualified.
Britton boxed for another 8 years and was still beating some of the top boxers at the age of 43.

Jack Britton was a masterful boxer whose career spanned 25 years.
Although he was a talented fighter, Britton languished in the lower ranks until he teamed up with manager Dan Morgan, who insisted his boxers live clean and train hard.
Britton lost the welterweight belt in Madison Square Garden later that year to the much younger Mickey Walker, who floored Britton three times.

In 1915 Lewis scored a knockdown riding it to the defeated of Jack Britton over 12 rounds to win the world welterweight title and go on to defend it 5 times in that year, three of the times against Britton.
Lewis would loose the title to Britton in 1916 when Britton took a 20 round decision in New Orleans, his manager always claimed he rushed Lewis back from a hand injury too soon for this bout.
In 1921 Lewis and Britton fought their last bout for the welterweight title in which Lewis could not regain the world title losing in a bitterly contested 15 round contest.

In those during which a verdict was rendered, Britton won four, Lewis won three and there was one draw.
In their first meeting, Aug. 31, 1915, Lewis, whose real name was Gershon Mendeloff, defeated Britton to gain universal recognition of the welterweight title.
Britton then made three title defenses (two against Lewis) before Lewis took back the title, again over 20 rounds, June 25, 1917 in Dayton, Ohio.

You state that the Kifer house on Grant Road was originally owned by Jack Britton, son of Flora Kifer Britton.
Jack Britton was my husband's (George Kifer's) cousin and spent a lot of time in that house, playing with George and his brother Earl when they were all young boys.
Jack died many years ago and I still correspond with his widow, Virginia Britton.

In December 1923, Kaplan defeated "The Pride of Harlem" Jack McVey in a 12-round decision.
The first bout in December 1923 ended in a Kaplan loss while the second, which took place in Kaplan's hometown of Newark in October 1924, ended in a 10-round no decision (although according to reports, Kaplan was the better fighter).

Patsy Haley refereed the Welterweight Championship bout between Jack Britton and Benny Leonard on June 26, 1922.
In the 13th round, Jack dropped to one knee from a body blow and protested to Patsy Haley that the punch had been low.
When Haley continued to count over Britton, Benny struck Jack while he was down, and was disqualified.

 Ted “Kid” Lewis (Gershon Mendeloff)
When Lewis won a 12-round decision over World Welterweight Champion Jack Britton in Boston on August 31, 1915, The Kid became the first Englishman to win a world boxing title in the United States.
Lewis and the American Britton were to fight 20 times between 1915 and 1921, with Lewis losing the title to Britton in 1916, regaining it the next year, and losing it for the final time in March 1919.
It was designed for him by his dentist, Jack Marks, himself a former fighter.
