Brymer was unusual in that he came from the world of amateur music and jazz, and brought to his orchestral playing a particularly warm and flexible tone.
Brymer was a founder-member of the Wigmore Ensemble, the Prometheus Ensemble and the London Baroque Ensemble, director of the London Wind Soloists, and a member of the Tuckwell Wind Quartet and the Robles Ensemble.

Jack Brymer, who died on Monday aged 88, was a clarinettist whose relaxed playing style and serene tone inspired a generation of players after the war.
Brymer went further still to make the clarinet attractive by travelling up and down the the country, and beyond on cruises, demonstrating the instrument's possibilities, from traditional jazz and the flashy, syncopated concerto by Elie Siegmeister to Gordon Jacob's arrangements of baroque music.
Brymer was appointed OBE in 1960, and received honorary degrees from the universities of Newcastle-upon-Tyne, Kingston and de Montfort.

Brymer, Gwydion Brooke (bassoon), Gerald Jackson (flute) and Terence MacDonagh (oboe) became known as ‘The Royal Family’ of wind players, and were widely regarded as the one section of the RPO that outshone the competition from Walter Legge’s Philharmonia.
Brymer taught music worldwide and was a professor at the Royal Academy of Music, Guildhall School of Music and Drama and the Royal Military School of Music.

These two recordings are a splendid achievement of modern musicianship: the notes are played accurately and crisply throughout the entire CD - unlike some distinctly echoey and hazey performances I have heard lately - and, most importantly, with great flair.
In the first movement, Brymer starts the performance with the air of one telling a Harry Potter story to children, such is the opening: intriguing and delightful.
As far as the first movement of this work is concerned, it is played with feeling, sweetly and is made exciting, of what could otherwise be considered a slow, tedious movement to some people.
