Chesbro was a right-hander, 5-foot-9, 180 pounds, a spitball pitcher who came from Red Sox country, although not another of those Bostonians sold to the Yankees by theater impresario Harry Frazee.
Chesbro was discovered by Ed Barrow, founder of the Atlantic League and later, as Yankees general manager, the architect of Murderer's Row.
Chesbro's fairy tale 1904 season with the Highlanders ended in ignominy when, on the final day of the season, his wild pitch allowed the winning run to score and cost the Highlanders the pennant.

Chesbro's best pitch was a spitball, saying it was the "most effective ball that possibly could be used." The 5-foot-9 righthander said he could make the ball drop two or three inches or a foot and a half.
Chesbro, nicknamed Happy Jack, had a 197-128 record in 11 seasons.

Thirty-year-old New York pitcher Jack Chesbro threw a four-hit, complete game against Boston on Oct. 7, 1904, as the pre-Yankee Hilltoppers edged the pre-Red Sox Pilgrims, 3-2.
It was a respectable effort for that late in the season; what made it extraordinary, however, was that it was Chesbro's 41st win during a season in which he threw in 55 games.
Only four of those appearances were in relief and Chesbro was often called on to pitch four times a week.
