  Jack Finney - obituary
Jack Finney, the author of the time-travel novel "Time and Again" and the science-fiction thriller "The Body Snatchers," died yesterday at Marin General Hospital in Greenbrae, Calif. He was 84 and lived in Mill Valley, Calif.
Finney first showed an interest in time travel in the short- story collection "The Third Level," which included stories about a commuter who discovers a train that runs between New York and the year 1894, and a man who rebuilds an old car and finds himself transported back to the 1920's.
Finney also wrote "Marion's Wall" (1973), about a silent-film actress who, in an attempt to revive her film career, enters the body of a shy woman, and "The Night People" (1977).

Finney's eye for detail and his ability to weave historical fact seamlessly with his fiction will have you believing that Finney travelled through time himself to bring this tale to life.
Finney expresses the inability of the average modern person to be able to think of the past as living and new.
I wouldn't be surprised if this is a story that Finney had been nurturing for some time and that it bears the age of author and his reflection on the period of when he may have been closer to Simon's age.

Finney throughout this story points out through his narrator that there were no big revelations that let him know he had slipped into the past.
Finney also underscores one of his concepts of time travel that he later expanded upon in his novel Time and Again, that in order to travel to the past you must let go of the present.

 Tech Tidbit -- January 2004
The science behind the method is a little shaky--involving mental conditioning to prepare an individual to fully understand and live in another era combined with self-hypnosis--but it scarcely detracts from the delights of the book.
Finney paints a vivid picture of life in New York City in 1882, a period he obviously relished and (one can assume from the sentimentality of his writing) in which he, himself, would have liked to live.
Also delightful is Finney's account of a young woman from 1882 who Morley briefly brings back to1970 and her reactions to the technologies, fashions, and life-styles of the mid-20th century.

Finney's Old New York is both magical and romanticized, a little like Mark Helprin's in Winter's Tale.
It's an idealized version of New York, to be sure, and Finney doesn't tell us about the child labor, the rampant racism, the myriad of problems that were portrayed in Caleb Carr's The Alienist, for example.
Finney wisely presents no new earth-shaking ideas here and only briefly touches on themes such as the paradox and angst associated with fooling around with the course of history.
