Jack Gilford - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Jack Gilford (July 25, 1908 – June 2, 1990) was an American actor with a long and successful career on the Broadway stage, films and television.
Gilford's specialties was pantomime, and this talent was put to good use by director George Abbott when he cast Gilford as the silent King Sextimus in Once upon a Mattress (Off-Broadway, 1959).
Gilford shared the stage with a young Carol Burnett in this production, and reprised his performance with her in two separate televised versions of the show, in 1964 and in 1972.

Gilford's booming career came to an abrupt halt in the early 1950s, when he and his actress wife Madeline Lee were fllisted for allegedly harboring "leftist" views.
Gilford returned to films in the 1960s, offering side-splitting characterizations in A Funny Thing Happened On the Way to the Forum (1966, repeating his Broadway role as Hysterium), Enter Laughing (1967) and They Might Be Giants (1971).

It's a pity that Lemmon wasn't tapped to provide a commentary while he was alive (and it's a pity that this wasn't issued earlier to take advantage of that) but having Shagan and Avildsen (much less any commentary track) relate their stories about the making of the movie is a delight.
I give this film the pass for the superb supporting work of Jack Gilford as Lemmon's conscientious business partner, Thayer David as a professional arsonist, and Laurie Heineman as a free-spirited girl that Lemmon has a one-night stand with.
The supporting cast is uniformly superb, from Jack Gilford as Harry's partner, to the dangerously gorgeous Lara Parker as the call girl Margo, to Thayer David's professional arsonist, and Laurie Heineman as the rootless but warm hippie girl who spends a few hours with Harry.
