  U B U W E B : The Films of Jack Goldstein
Goldstein's earliest films show arduous, sometimes quixotic solo actions performed for the camera: In one, the artist hammers a nail into a piece of wood and then pries it loose with his teeth, while in another he sprints around the studio, apparently trying to outrun his shadow.
Goldstein's critical stance is compelling, in part because it clearly belongs to a bygone era--these works were meant to be shown in alternative spaces and were conceived long before artist's films were viable commodities.
Goldstein's reference to van Gogh is considered, creating a fertile parallel between industrialization and the birth of modernity and the conditions of his own emergent postmodern moment.

Why you should know the name Jack Goldstein. - By Jim Lewis - Slate Magazine
Goldstein was born in Montreal in 1945, moved down to Los Angeles, and graduated from Cal Arts in '72.
In another, Goldstein took stock footage of a diver, stripped out everything but the human figure, and used a rotoscope (a method of converting live action into animation) so that all that was left was a luminous form, twisting and plunging through empty space.
Goldstein himself did well enough, but not as well as many: His art was, literally, immaterial, a reduction to pure picture and sound, which left comparatively little to sell.
