Yesterday I pointed to a gallery of JackKirby comic book covers from the 1970s.
The FourthWorld dealt with the battle between good and evil as represented by the worlds of "New Genesis" and "Apokolips." Darkseid, the evil lord of Apokolips, seeks the Anti-Life Equation which will allow him to control the thoughts of all living beings.
Mercifully, Kirby's work at this time was inked by "Jumpin'" Joe Sinnot, who made Kirby's pencils sharp and clear, as opposed to the horsebrush and garden-trowel technique of Vince "Vinny the C" Colletta, whose hamsfisted inking efforts spoiled many a Kirby page when he was at Marvel.
JackKirby Collector celebrates the life and career of the "King" of comics through interviews with Kirby and his contemporaries, feature articles, and rare and unseen Kirby artwork.
I was familiar with Kirby, but I had never made the connection that this was the Kirby from my youth until I started getting involved with comic fanzines, and the light bulb went off and I realized this was the guy whose stuff I'd loved as a kid.
But when you're taking somebody like a JackKirby or a Russ Manning or a Gil Kane and you're inking their pencils, to put another piece of paper between their pencils and your brush, what you're then doing is just an "impression" of their pencils.
As far as favorite artists go, Kirby was not a first choice for me, but I always enjoyed his sense of the dramatic, which was always a mainstay of any Kirby page layout.
Charecters on his pages always were dynamic and seemed to have a life of their own and an urgency to whatever they might be depicted doing on his pages.
When it came to Kirby and comics, everything he did was epic.
Kirby at the time, so I got to be on the premises as he brought forth this masterpiece.
Kirby felt that comics, to survive, would have to move into upscale formats and legit bookstores.
Orion is Kirby, not literally but emotionally, and among the many inhabitants of the FourthWorld, one finds dozens more JackKirbys, each an analogy for some facet of his life and career.

This is the second volume from DC that reprints Kirby's Mister Miracle (in fl and white with gray tones).
By the time most of the stories for this second volume came out the other FourthWorld titles were cancelled or on the verge of being so.
The three titles, which Kirby was writing, drawing and editing himself, where meant to be a grand space opera concluding with a great showdown between Orion and and his father Darkseid.
