 The Apartment
The film centers around C.C. Baxter (Jack Lemmon), one of the nearly 31,000 employees at an insurance company called Consolidated Life; C.C., usually called "Bud" with varying degrees of condescension by his co-workers, actually provides the precise number of people on the payroll at Consolidated Life.
The company is such a behemoth that the hours of workers' shifts and their freedom to enter and exit the building must be carefully regulated so as not to overburden the elevators.
The only characters who don't seem beholden to Wilder's project of exposing human failings and frailties are Lemmon's neighbors (Joan Shawlee and Oscar-nominated Jack Kruschen), who patiently endure the steady comings and goings in Lemmon's apartment, as well as the record-playing and carnal sound effects they receive through the walls.

In this masterly social comedy the self-deluding hero CC Baxter (Jack Lemmon) thinks he has some control over the events in his life.
In reality Baxter is put upon nastily by the oily executives who like to use his handily located Manhattan apartment for extra-marital trysts, and nicely by the elevator girl Fran Kubelik (Shirley MacLaine) who sees him as the one decent male in a pool of piranhas.

Renowned as one of the great screen comedies of all time and as the last movie of the year to be produced on fl and white film before Schindler's List, The Apartment is a darkly comic morality play swaddled in then contemporary clothes.
The main trouble with his bachelor's life, aside from being lonely, is that he's made a habit of lending out his apartment to four of his colleagues as a pied a terre for their extra-marital affairs.
It defines the supporting characters against broad stereotypes but renders them in three-dimensions using the talents of actors like Fred MacMurray, Ray Walston, Jack Kruschen and Edie Adams who imbue their parts with the kind of charisma and idiosyncrasy that makes them believably real.
