The current position regarding road tunnels in Ireland is that we have one existing TEN road tunnel between 500 metres and 1,000 metres long which comes within the terms of the directive, namely, the Jack Lynch tunnel in Cork.
Tunnels will have to be renovated according to a schedule not exceeding ten years.
The nature of tunnel design, construction and operation, by definition, involves the integration of a range of areas of technical expertise, some of which are quite daunting.

The technical provisions of the directive regarding, for example, ventilation, extraction devices, shelters and escape galleries are being examined by the Department of Transport, with a view to determining their impact on the Jack Lynch and Dublin Port tunnels.
While the height of the tunnel is attracting much comment, most of it unwarranted, I am more concerned with getting clarification on other safety aspects, including the ventilation issue, which has always been a concern of residents along the line of the tunnel, and the safety galleries.
It should be possible to implement them in the Dublin Port tunnel from the outset and if work is required on the Jack Lynch tunnel it should be done.

Engineers claim there is 'No design flaw' in low-clearance Dublin tunnel - Irish Architectural News
There is no design flaw in the Dublin Port Tunnel, the project's engineers insisted yesterday, even though it will be too low for some of the 9,000 lorries which use the port each day.
The tunnel, the major element of the city council's plan to reduce the number of articulated trucks trundling through Dublin's city centre each day, is designed to fast-track lorries from the M50 to the port.
And despite the clearance height, the actual height of vehicles using the tunnel will be further restricted, to 4.65 metres, as in the case of the Jack Lynch Tunnel under the River Lee in Cork.
