Bernard Alfred ("Jack") Nitzsche (Chicago, April 22, 1937 Hollywood, August 25, 2000) was an integral presence in the history of popular music in the 20th century.
Nitzsche had also worked on film scores throughout his career, such as the distinctive soundtracks for 'The Exorcist' and 'One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest'.
Jack Nitzsche was mythologized as 'The Dark Prince' in Jimmy McDonough's biography of Neil Young, 'Shakey'.

Nitzsche and his benefactor, Sonny Bono, eventually co-wrote several songs, including the hit "Needles and Pins", which scored as a chart success 3 times: With original artist Jackie de Shannon, the Searchers in 1964, and a generation later with The Ramones.
Nitzsche worked at a manic pace through the 60s and 70s, committing himself to Neil Young's band Buffalo Springfield (and later Young as a solo act) while he was working with the Rolling Stones and scoring motion pictures.
Nitzsche's fortunes and health declined in equal measures during the 1990s, as he suffered the end of his second marriage, reoccurring respiratory ailments, and a resurgence of his substance dependency, which may have contributed to his periods of documented emotional imbalance.

Nitzsche was also a recording artist in his own right, debuting in 1963 with "The Lonely Surfer" on Reprise Records, the title track of which would crack the top 40 that year.
Nitzsche also put his composing and arranging skills to use in the area of movie soundtracks, beginning with the 1964 rock and roll film The T.A.M.I. Show and including Nicholas Roeg's Performance.

Jack was having problems at home and so was I. My younger brother wanted his girl friend in the band to play bass, Jack said she wasn't good enough, my brother walked.
Jack was creative also and got his ideas (like the rest of the arrangers) a lot from US, and being around us, hearing our ideas etc......he was very professional and strong in his unusual ideas (and they usually worked well), no problem.
Jack Nitzsche was one of these I call 'the wonderful ones' simply because I had such a wonderful time raising holy hell with him.
