Tex Rickard was awarded an NHL franchise in 1926 to compete with the now-long-forgotten New York Americans.
Rickard managed to get future legendary Toronto Maple Leafs coach Conn Smythe to assemble the team (including coach Lester Patrick), and it turned out to be a winner.

Jack still possessed a knockout punch and that was why Gene had done much of his roadwork in reverse -- running backwards for several miles to strengthen his legs and give him balance in the face of Dempsey's rushing tactics.

Jack Davis (born December 2, 1924) is an American cartoonist and illustrator.
In a curious event of synchronicity, when Mad moved to 1700 Broadway, the magazine's fifth-floor production department was next to a wall that had previously been the location, only three feet away, of an immense Davis cartoon for a bank advertisement that towered six stories over 53rd Street.
For his work, he was a formally named finalist for inclusion in the Jack Kirby Hall of Fame in 1990, 1991, and 1992.

His greatest fame, of course, came as the creator, with Jack Dempsey's collaboration, of the fabulous "million-dollar gate." But this was preceded by his first two record-breaking title fight promotions: Joe Gans and Battling Nelson in 1906, Jack Johnson and Jim Jeffries in 1910.

I was amazed to see in the March 30 paper that Jack Rickard is still carrying out a vendetta against former pro golfer and TV announcer Ken Venturi.
Rickard falls back on his old criticisms of Venturi as an announcer that he was hard to understand and had nothing interesting to say.
Rickard concludes his little diatribe by suggesting that Venturi shut up and go away.
