Something changed this season, even if Wilson isn't exactly sure what it is. As the Pirates begin their final series of the season Friday in Cincinnati, Wilson is one hit away from becoming the franchise's first player with 200 hits since Dave Parker in 1977.
Until now, Wilson was compared favorably to predecessors such as Groat, Gene Alley and Jay Bell for his defense, but no one in the organization expressed any hope he would become one of the National League's best offensive shortstops.
That's why Wilson wasn't very successful last weekend when he tried to downplay what a 200-hit season would mean to a classic overachiever who surprised many just by making the majors.

How the Pirates handle the Benson trade along with the Jack and Craig Wilson contracts will tell observers whether the Pirates will remain content to be ‘competitive’ — that is, to maintain their annual ‘Drive for 75’ or even up it to a ‘Drive for 81’ — or will seek to build a championship contender.
Wilson was really a hitting prospect in the minors (not a glove one), he was probably just rushed a bit too quickly through the minors.
The funny thing is that, when the Pirates compare a player to Craig Wilson, it's like getting the kiss of death.… But, no Pirate front office type has drawn the House-Wilson comparison in the recent past, so that means the Pirates have higher hopes for House than they had before this season.
