Despite these highlights, most of Shadows in the Air drags on, and although professionally done, it ultimately wallows uneventfully in its subdued ambience.

Shadow - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A shadow cast by the Earth on the Moon is a lunar eclipse.
The term shadow is also used with regard to other things than light, for example rain: a rain shadow is a dry area, which, with respect to the prevailing wind direction, is beyond a mountain range; it is dry because air masses lose part of their water when they move over these mountains.
Shadows, mainly in this genre, are said to be the departed souls of people that have had their lives tragically cut short or did not receive acceptance in heaven or hell.

Written by Roger Zelazny and published in 1971, Jack of Shadows is an elegant work of fiction.
Morningstar's role is beautifully interwoven into the story -- his conversation with Jack is a masterpiece of dialog in fiction.
After completing this relatively short novel, the reader is struck by a profound sense both of completion and bewilderment, in the perfect proportions of which Zelazny is a master.

The protagonist, Shadow Jack, almost a supernatural force in human form, is first shown in a fantasy setting, where we learn something of his powers, his enemies, and his character as he falls into a trap and undergoes an ordeal from which he must somehow extricate himself.
Jack isn't just fighting his enemies but also his soul; his old gypsy lover; and then the denizens underground where the machine that runs the world is located.
Jack was a sympathetic character who wanted to do his enemies in and that's a pretty popular idea for most people; maybe even more so for the typical nerd who was ostracized or ridiculed growing up.

Jack of Shadows is very loosely based on Norse and Celtic myths.
At the beginning of the novel, the earth Jack inhabits doesn't rotate on its axis, one side, inhabited by supernatural creatures, is always dark, the other, ruled by modern technology, is always in the light.
Since Jack has the ability to move between the worlds of magic and science, he can also be seen as bridge, or transition point between these realms.

Unfortunately, the plot is highly episodic and while the contrast between the worlds of night and day in the first two sections of the book is beautifully realised, the third section of the novel takes the story off in another direction altogether with all too few links with what has gone before.
Still, the book's central idea of shadow as a third realm between the dualist extremes of light and darkness is a wonderful conceit and the perfect metaphor for the characteristics of the archetypal Zelazny protagonist who is both flawed hero and virtuous villain.
