It's inevitable to write about Jackson Browne in terms of his lyrics but that's because his sense of language is itself so musical -- the way the lines twist and turn through unlikely metric shapes is one constant of his work from his debut album, Saturate Before Using, through his mid-'90s masterpiece, I'm Alive.
Browne helped organize antinuclear rallies; he visited Nicaragua to help publicize the way the United States was subverting the revolution there, by staging the covert war later known as Contragate.
This is one time Jackson Browne did his words profound justice as a singer -- it's simply a great piece of singing, stark, angry, pained and yet aching more than anything else with love that's proven yet again to be insufficient to hold a life together.

 Jackson Browne Criticism
It seems safe [now], if somewhat brash, to make a claim: Jackson Browne is the most important American songwriter since Bob Dylan and is perhaps as true a voice of the 70's as we are going to hear.
The first is that Browne is nowhere near so loose, prolific or wide-ranging as Dylan, and we still have not seen all that much of his work yet….
It's hard not to love Jackson Browne, even if you're not a teenage girl who can't believe how cute he is. Because the power of his songs extends beyond their compact, bittersweet appeal.

After several platinum albums with increasingly political lyrics, Browne turned his attention to Central America: half the songs here are about that part of the world and/or US involvement there ("Soldier Of Plenty"), and he even brings in a Nueva Canción band, Sangre Machehual, on the album's most effective tune (title track).
Browne gets really preachy here, laying his politics on thick when he has a clear message ("When The Stone Begins To Turn," "The Word Justice"), and also when he just wants to let you know how fucked up things are (title track).
Jackson Browne is no dope; by the mid-90s everyone was sick to death of overproduction and entirely willing to embrace old-fashioned rock and roll (or punk, or disco, or whatever).

Of course, Jackson Browne is most famous for his beautiful, low key, shining, stunning emotional tracks that filled the first 10 years of his career, before he became America's unheard political spokesman.
Included from Jackson's on the road journal on songs are the favourites, 'The Load-Out' an ode to the roadies, followed by 'Stay' one of the few songs that Browne didn't write on this collection, as well as the infamous hit title track.
The hit single 'Somebody's Baby' was one of the few shining lights for Browne throughout the eighties, remaining timeless despite the eighties style vocal effects on the chorus, and the strange flute style noises in the background.

Throughout the '70s, Browne epitomized the confessional singer-songwriter genre: His songs were often introspective, personal, and poetic, tinged with melancholy and longing-but they could also rock, albeit in that laid-back, California way.
In the '80s, Browne's work became more political, and while his albums could seem strident, the songs that make up the second disc, such as "Lives in the Balance" and "Lawyers in Love," are powerful and sharp.
Jackson Browne long displayed an aversion to hits collections, releasing his first one 25 years after his debut album.
