In the county the population is spread out with 28.30% under the age of 18, 6.80% from 18 to 24, 26.70% from 25 to 44, 23.40% from 45 to 64, and 14.90% who are 65 years of age or older.

JACKSON County (formerly Calhoun), was one of the thirty-three counties organized by the first Territorial Legislature of Kansas, at its session in 1858, at the Shawnee Manual Labor School, in Johnson County.
The northwest portion of the county was government land; from Netawaka east in the northeast part of the county, having for a southern boundary the line of Straight Creek, was the land of the Kickapoos.
The supply of timber in Jackson County is hardly surpassed by that of any county in the State, and its area is constantly on the increase caused by the rapid diminution of prairie fires, and the very considerable culture of prairie groves.

In 1833, he went to Saline County, and afterwards Platte County, Missouri, where he was engaged in selling goods and farming, remaining until 1856 when he came to Kansas with a stock of goods and started a store at the mouth of Bill's Creek.
In 1848 he moved to Vernon County, Missouri, and was one of the pioneers of that county, and was one of the Board of Commissioners that located the county-seat at Nevada.
GATES, proprietor of cheese factory and feed-mill, was born in Lawrence County, N. Y., in 1850, and was raised on a farm.

This treaty was ratified at a council of the Kansas portion of the Pottawatomies, on Pottawatomie creek, on the 17th of June, 1846.
The Kansas Pottawatomies began to move in 1847, some of them arriving in what is now Shawnee county in that year.
That portion of the treaty adopted at the Kansas agency on Pottawatomie creek recites that there is a Prairie band in all the three tribes of Ottawas, Chippewas and Pottawatomies.
