In the county the population was spread out with 19.00% under the age of 18, 17.90% from 18 to 24, 24.40% from 25 to 44, 25.00% from 45 to 64, and 13.80% who were 65 years of age or older.

The county was formed in 1828 from the western part of Haywood County.
It was named for Nathaniel Macon, who represented North Carolina in the United States House of Representatives from 1791 to 1815 (serving as Speaker of the House from 1801 to 1807), and in the United States Senate from 1815 to 1828.
In the county the population was spread out with 20.30% under the age of 18, 6.10% from 18 to 24, 23.20% from 25 to 44, 27.90% from 45 to 64, and 22.40% who were 65 years of age or older.

 Sylva, North Carolina
Sylva is the county seat for Jackson County and is the center of commerce and industry for our county's approximately 29,000 residents.
The historic Jackson County Court House on Main Street was built in 1914.
Again the General Assembly intervened and called for an election in 1913, when Sylva wrestled the county seat away from Webster in a heated election and began constructing the courthouse building in 1914 on Main Street, using a similar structure in Madison County as a model.
