Jackson's political career began when he was elected the newly formed state of Tennessee's first representative to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1796.
Jackson was given the responsibility of dealing with the problem and he soon gained national fame for his successful campaign against the Creek Indians.
In 1832, the Starchers donated eight acres of land to the county, two acres for the location of the county courthouse and jail, and six for the general use of the new county (a public school and a cemetery were later located on the land).

It was said that his sole ambition in life was to alert some poor traveler of the presence of Indians and preventing them from becoming a victim of what he viewed were murderous savages.
The land upon which Ripley, the county seat, sits was originally owned and settled by William John and Lewis Rodgers who received a grant of 400 acres in 1768 where “Sycamore Creek joins Big Mill Creek” (the current site of Ripley).
In 1832, the Starchers donated land for the location of the county courthouse, county jail, a public school, and a burial ground.

Parents of John is believed to be Peter and Elizabeth TRITT of Greenbrier County, later in Lee County, My g Grandfather Ira, son of John and Polly, was born in Va and with family moved to Missouri in the mid 1840 time frame.
He was a Civil War veteran who served with the West Virginia Cavalry, "E 5th," apparently the 5th Regiment, Company E. In addition to Mary and James M. KAY, there were at least two other siblings, Harriet and Hannah Kay.
