Jackson was originally planned out in April 1822 by Peter Van Dorn in a "checkerboard" pattern advocated by Thomas Jefferson, in which city blocks alternated with parks and other open spaces, giving the appearance of a checkerboard.
Jackson's economic growth was stimulated in the 1930s by the discovery of natural gas fields nearby.
Jackson is located on the Pearl River, and is served by the Ross Barnett Reservoir, which forms a section of the Pearl River and is located northeast of Jackson on the border between Madison and Rankin counties.

A round robin playoff tournament between first-place Montgomery, third-place Nashville and fourth-place Birmingham (the second-place club, Jackson declined to participate due to player injuries) began on March 5 with Nashville and Montgomery advancing to the league championship series.
Bessemer, Birmingham, Jackson and Mobile all dropped out of the league following the season and the Birmingham Steelers, Laurel Oilers and New Orleans Sports (who had played in the Professional Basketball League of America as the Hurricanes) were recruited to bring the league back up to five clubs.
The league's postseason tournament was cancelled just prior to the conclusion of the regular season and the league disbanded after the season ended.
