Andrew Jackson and Indian Removal   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-13)
In short, by adopting white civilization, the Cherokees had also managed to reproduce the white class system of haves and have-nots—a system that was very much in evidence in the country at that time, but a system that most whites refused to acknowledge among themselves.
Ultimately, these whites were more threatened by the so-called "civilized" Indian than by a drunken, savage Indian, because civilized Indians could govern themselves in their own territory, beating the white man at his own game, and by doing so, prevent the further acquisition of Indian land.
Jackson stated that in his view Native Americans residing within the boundaries of old or new states were subject to the laws of those states.

JACKSON: Yes, but there are probably some fl men who have been so broken, whose lives have been so twisted that they would be dangerous to all other men, both fl and white, and I suppose they should not be released from confinement, though I would hope that genuine rehabilitation would replace detention.

Jackson Whites, name applied to a group of people of mixed descent (African, European, and Native American) living in the Ramapo Mts.
Research suggests that the origin of these people is to be found among remnants of the Algonquin, early white settlers (mainly British and Dutch), and free, landholding fls who pioneered the Hackensack River valley before migrating to the Ramapo Mts.
The term Jackson Whites probably developed as a result of the continued joint reference to the mountain people as Jacks (an 18th-century term for freed slaves or fls in general) and Whites, i.e., it became Jackson Whites by elision.
