Jaco Pastorius - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Jaco Pastorius, born John Francis Anthony Pastorius III (December 1, 1951 – September 21, 1987) was a jazz bassist and composer, notable for his virtuoso technique and fretless bass playing style.
Jaco went through elementary and middle school at St. Clement's Catholic School (he was an altar boy at the adjoining church) in nearby Wilton Manors, and went to high school at Northeast High in Oakland Park.
Pastorius was a master of using natural and artificial harmonics to extend the range of the bass (exemplified in the bass solo Portrait Of Tracy off of his eponymous album) and could achieve a nearly horn-like tone simply by changing the tone control and his playing technique.

 Jaco Pastorius
John Francis Pastorius III was born on December 1, 1951, in Norristown, PA, and raised in Ft. Lauderdale, FL, the son of a professional drummer and singer.
Jaco also garnered criticism in some jazz circles for his spotlight-stealing tendencies, and for the fact that he and the equally domineering Zawinul were pushing Shorter—considered by many as one the greatest players and writers in jazz history--to an ever-smaller role in Weather Report.
Jaco was hospitalized a number of other times, including at Bellevue, but it never helped, and as often happens with artists who suffer manic-depression, he didn't like the side effects of his medication and often wouldn't take it.

 Jaco Pastorius
Jaco Pastorius was a meteor who blazed onto the scene in the 1970s, only to flame out tragically in the 1980s.
With a brilliantly fleet technique and fertile melodic imagination, Pastorius made his fretless electric bass leap out from the depths of the rhythm section into the front line with fluid machine-gun-like passages that demanded attention.
Alas, Pastorius became overwhelmed by mental problems, exacerbated by drugs and alcohol, in the mid-`80s, leading to several embarrassing public incidents (one was a violent crackup onstage at Hollywood Bowl in mid-set at the 1984 Playboy Jazz Festival).

1976 was a big year for Pastorius, as it was also the year he released his self-titled solo album, a release that had enormous impact on the spheres of jazz, fusion, and bass playing in general.
Jaco’s story ended in tragedy, however; he began to suffer from mental illness, which, had it been successully treated, would likely have been diagnosed as a bipolar affective disorder.
