The term Mormon is a colloquial name referring to Latter Day Saints, derived in the 1830s from the Book of Mormon, one of their books of scripture, whose compiler was called the prophet Mormon.
In a press release from 2001, the LDS Church stated that the word "Mormon" as an adjective in such expressions as "Mormon pioneers", "Mormons" as a noun in reference to church members, and "Mormonism" as a doctrine, culture, and lifestyle were all acceptable.
The LDS Church argues "Mormon", "Mormon fundamentalist" and "Mormon dissident" in reference to organizations or groups outside of the LDS Church (especially those that practice plural marriage) is a misunderstanding of Mormon theology, in particular the principle of continuous revelation and Priesthood authority.

Book of Mormon - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Words of Mormon, written in AD 385 by Mormon, is a short introduction to the books of Mosiah, Alma, Helaman, 3 Nephi, and 4 Nephi, all of which he abridged from a large quantity of existing records that detailed his nation's history from the time of Omni to his own life.
The Book of Mormon is of prime importance to the church as one of the greatest differentiating factors of the Church as well as a spiritual foundation.
The Book of Mormon’s significance was reiterated in the late 20th century by Ezra Taft Benson, Apostle and 13th President of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Very few FARMS scholars and other Mormonism historians will definitively tie the two together because of the lack of evidence.

The Book of Mormon (properly titled The Book of Mormon: Another Testament of Jesus Christ) is a sacred book of scripture that testifies of Jesus Christ and explains the Lord's dealings with His people in the ancient Americas.
The Book of Mormon is accepted by the members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints as the word of God, along with the Bible, the Doctrine and Covenants and the Pearl of Great Price.
The ancient American prophet Mormon, for whom the book was named, wrote that its purpose is to remind people what God has done for His people anciently and most importantly to convince all people “that Jesus is the Christ, the Eternal God" (Book of Mormon title page).

Mormon was an ancient prophet born in 310 AD Central America.
Mormon's record, the gospel of Christ, came forth to a latter-day prophet, Joseph Smith, a descendant of Jacob's son, Joseph, who was sold into Egypt
In this book, Jesus states that the act of Israel's latter-day descendants reading this book is in itself a sign to them that the Father's work has begun...that He will soon fulfill His covenant to all the house of Israel, to bring them knowledge of their Redeemer and restore them to their lands of inheritance.

Only the Book of Mormon begins verse 10 with "O ye wicked ones." This addition appears to be a preservation of the parallel mention of idols in verses 18 and 20.

The phrases "or out of the waters of baptism" in 1 Nephi 20:1; and "and shalt not remember the reproach of thy youth" in 3 Nephi 22:4 were both added to the text of the Book of Mormon during the editing process by the Prophet Joseph Smith and did not appear in the 1830 edition.

Negative Questions in the Book of Mormon
Because of their presence in the KJV, this pattern in the Book of Mormon cannot be used as strong evidence of a Hebrew original.
The Book of Mormon also asks negative questions in which the speaker answers his own question with an answer, "yea." This may correspond to a slightly different category of questions using h?lô, indicating that "an affirmative answer is expected."
As a side note, several critics of the Book of Mormon have argued that if one takes Moroni 10:4 literally, a positive response to a prayerful inquiry as to its truthfulness would indicate that the Book of Mormon was false.
