 ORNL Review Vol. 25, Nos. 3 and 4, 2002
Larry Glendenin and Jacob Marinsky, using ion-exchange chromatography applied by Waldo Cohn for separating fission products, separated element 61 from other rare earth elements produced by uranium fission in the Graphite Reactor.
Too busy with defense-related chemistry during the war, Glendenin and Marinsky did not claim their discovery until 1946 after Coryell had moved to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
The existence of one rare earth, element 61, was predicted by the 1930s, but it had never been produced and identified before Charles Coryell's chemistry group at Clinton Laboratories did so in 1944.

 Promethium
Proof of the existence of Promethium was obtained in 1944 only by Jacob A. Marinsky, Lawrence E. Glendenin and Charles D. Coryell during the analysis of byproducts of uranium fission; however, being too busy with defense-related research during World War II, they did not claim their discovery until 1946.
Several groups claimed to have produced the element, but they could not confirm their discoveries because of the difficulty of separating Promethium from other elements.
The name Promethium is derived from Prometheus from Greek mythology, who stole the fire of the sky and gave it to mankind.

All claims of 'discovery' were discarded in 1941 when it was shown that the element does not occur in natural minerals.
They named it after the mythological figure Prometheus, who stole fire from the Gods and was punished - an allusion to the pros and cons of nuclear reactions.

 Book preface
I also wish to thank and formally acknowledge the following publishers for permission to use their material in this book: Marcell Dekker, Inc. for portions of chapter 1 of Jacob Marinsky's book Ion Exchange, 1966; J. Baltzer, AG, for portions of my paper co- authored by F. Sauer in J. Math.
I kept them waiting much longer than I care to mention, partially because of some the part of university life we all wish we could find a way to do away with and partially because I am always very unrealistic about the magnitude of the tasks to which I commit myself.

 EU COMMISSIONER ERKKI LIIKANEN:
Jacob E. Marinsky and Lawrence E. Glendenin found the last lanthanide in 1945 among the disintegration products in an atomic reactor at
More important, and of big consequence for the whole discovery history of the elements, was that the young lieutenant’s interest for chemistry and mineralogy was awakened by the contact with these experienced masters.
According to the theory of electron configuration in atoms there should be 14.

 September 01 News
Promethium, element 61, was first predicted in 1903, and evidence was collected of its existence in 1926, but it was not "discovered" until 1945, when Jacob A. Marinsky, Lawrence E. Glendenin, and Charles DuBois Coryell found it in the fission products of uranium while doing nuclear research at Oak Ridge, Tennessee.
The name "promethium" comes from Greek mythology, where Prometheus stole fire from heaven and gave it to mankind.
