The Legacy of Herman Amberg Preus
Preus advocated private confession and absolution[37] and regularly confessed his own sins to a “father confessor” (young enough to be his son!)[38] because he knew his own carnal weakness and he wanted his faith to rely solely on the word of God.
For Preus, the unionistic spirit, the spirit of doctrinal compromise for the sake of the appearance of unity, was of the devil.
That is the legacy of Herman Amberg Preus.

Pastor Jacob A. Ottesen came from several generations of Lutheran ministers in Norway and in 1853, like Preus, was a founder of the Norwegian Lutheran Synod in Wisconsin.
Ottesen and his congregation struggled over this issue for years until 1889 when the congregation notified him that his ministry was terminated and that he would have to vacate the parsonage.

Preus also demanded higher taxes from the owners of ore-rich mines on the Iron Range, expanded highway construction, and improved equal rights and election procedures.

C.K. Preus (and J.C.K. Preus, his son) in effect charges Dr. Pieper with giving conflicting advice, between the December 28, 1916 personal meeting and the January 9, 1917 letter.
I told you at Decorah and I am repeating it now that Dr. Preus and Rev. Torrison had every reason to be confounded by such an "opinion." It is not for me to judge what caused Dr. Pieper to write this meaningless letter.
