Jacob Abbott - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-21)
Jacob Abbott (November 14, 1803 October 31, 1879) was an American writer of children's books.
In them Abbott did for one or two generations of young American readers a service not unlike that performed earlier, in England and America, by the authors of Evenings at Home, Sandford and Merton, and the Parent's Assistant.
His sons, Benjamin Vaughan Abbott, Austin Abbott, both eminent lawyers, Lyman Abbott, and Edward Abbott, a clergyman, were also well-known authors.

Son of Jacob Abbot 2nd and Betsey Abbot, and older brother of John Stevens Cabot Abbott, Jacob Abbott was born in Hallowell, ME and attended school in Brunswick, ME and the Hallowell Academy.
Jacob Abbott was an enthusiastic advocate for the education of young women, and his schools offered advanced academic training, instruction in moral values, and information on child rearing (Gay 10).
Abbott's refusal to simplify the teachings he directs at children is exemplified in the chapter entitled "Difficulties in Religion." Here, he presents problematic questions such as how God can grant an ill person's prayer without interfering miraculously with the laws of nature.

During this period, Jacob and his brother John also wrote a series of "Illustrated Histories" (1848-54), which were biographies of historical figures such as Alexander the Great, Cleopatra, Ghengis Khan, and Elizabeth I, intended for adolescents.
Around 1870, Jacob Abbott again returned to Farmington, this time to live in "Fewacres," his father's former house, since "Little Blue" was now a boarding school.
Abbott's children's series, especially his ten-volume Franconia stories (1850-54) have been praised for their depiction of children and their approach to storytelling.

Jacob Abbott kept his heroes in their New England home, busying them only with rambles and picnics in woods and fields.
The voluminous information of the Rollo books and the rest made convenient burlesque in later generations, but Abbott’s work had conspicuous common sense; and in pre-homeopathic days his sugar-coated pills were extraordinarily popular.
Their enormous sales prove their attractiveness; and Noah Brooks, himself an important juvenile writer, has recorded that, however tame they seemed later, they were thrilling in interest compared with all previous juveniles.

Jacob Abbott (1803-1879) was one of several remarkable brothers who grew up in southern Maine, attended Bowdoin College, and contributed to education -- particularly for women, and popular literature - much of it designed for children.
He and two of the brothers, John Stevens Cabot Abbott (1805-1877), and Gorham Dummer Abbot (1807-1874) (Gorham kept the old spelling of the family name, while Jacob and others taking his lead added a "t") are represented in the Dictionary of American Biography.
In it, Abbott delicately dissects unproductive attitudes that many teachers had (especially in this period when so many were teaching who never thought of that as a career), and attempts to provide the key to making teaching effective and pleasurable.

"Rollo's Travels," by Jacob Abbott (1839; rev ed)
Abbott's extended description of everything Rollo sees probably appealed to his young readers, who got a working knowledge of many things; it's certainly useful to later readers, who get (sometimes mind-numbing) details of everyday life in early 19th-century America.
Abbott's style is peculiarly interesting to children, being natural and simple, and portraying the trials and temptations of childhood, just as they occur in every-day life, and giving them clear and distinct ideas of the right and wrong in their actions.
Abbott possesses, in a very high degree, the faculty of awakening the interest of children.
