The keel for the ship of the Evangelical movement was laid by Jacob Albright, who was born near Pottstown, Pennsylvania, in 1759.
Albright had been raised as a Lutheran, but when his children died he found no firmness in the formal faith he had learned in catechetical class.
Albright searched for such assurance until it came in the summer of 1791 during a religious meeting at a neighbor's home.

JACOB ALBRIGHT (1759-1808), American clergyman, was born near Pottstown, Pennsylvania, on the 1st of May 1759.
His efforts met with great success, and in 1800 he founded what was virtually a new and independent church organization on the Methodist system, of which he became the presiding elder, and eventually (1807) bishop.
This church is officially the Evangelical Association, but its adherents have been variously known as "New Methodists." "Albrights," and "Albright Brethren." Albright died on the 18th of May 1808, at Mühlbach, Pennsylvania.

Albright’s greatest concern was that his newfound religious zeal and his experiences be transmitted to the Germans; the largest segment of the population in this region of Pennsylvania.
Albright dismounted his horse, fell on his knees in the middle of the road under a shower of stones, and called upon God as Stephen once did, praying that God might have mercy on his persecutors.
