Agardh began his studies on algae without a decent microscope and without a library or herbarium.
Even though Agardh held various professorships in Lund (of mathematics, botany, and economics), there was little or no financial remuneration, causing him to take Holy Orders in 1816 (Ott, 1991).
Indeed, Agardh excelled in a variety of disparate fields of human endeavor and could be ranked alongside his American counterparts, Benjamin Franklin and Thomas Jefferson, in this closing period of the Age of the Enlightenment (Ott, 1991).
