  Jacob Isaakszoon Van Ruysdael
The art of Ruysdael, while it shows- little of the scientific knowledge of later landscapists, is sensitive and poetic in sentiment, and direct and skilful in technique.
Unlike the other great Dutch landscape painters, Ruysdael did not aim at a pictorial record of particular scenes, but he carefully thought out and arranged his compositions, introducing into them an infinite variety of subtle contrasts in the formation of the clouds, the plants and tree forms, and the play of light.
Ruysdael etched a few plates, which were reproduced by Amand Durand in 1878, with text by Georges Duplessis.

Jacob van Ruisdael was born in Haarlem, the son of the painter Isaak van Ruisdael, whose works are unknown to us, and the nephew of the gifted landscape painter Salomon van Ruysdael.
Jacob's youthful works reflect the influence of his uncle and other painters of the Haarlem school, who played a leading part in the development of Dutch realistic landscape painting from the early years of the 17th century.
The preparatory drawings that he made for this painting show that the tombs were drawn from observation, the landscape background was imaginary, and the architecture was altered from a simple country church to a romantic ruin.

Adrian van de Velde (1639 – January, 1672), Dutch animal and landscape painter, son of Willem van de Velde, the elder and brother of William van de Velde, the younger, the marine painter, was born at Amsterdam.
He was trained in the studio of Jan Wynants, the landscape painter, where he made the acquaintance of Philip Wouwerman, who is believed to have aided him in his studies of animals, and to have exercised a powerful and beneficial influence upon his art.
His favourite subjects are scenes of open pasture land, with sheep, cattle and goats, which he executed with admirable dexterity, with much precision of touch and truth of draughtsmanship, and with clear silvery colouring.
